TAMPA, Fla.- Savannah State opened play in the 2024 NCAA Division II South Regional with a 16-7 loss to Tampa, in a game played May 16 at the UT Baseball Field.

The Tigers are the No. 8 seed in the South Region while Tampa is the No. 1 seed as well as South Region host.

Savannah State (31-16) took the lead in the top of the first inning when D'Sean Prinkleton hit a solo home run for a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans roughed up SSU starter Andrew Mann by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tampa added two more runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 9-1.

After a scoreless third inning, both teams put more runs on the scoreboard in the fourth.

Kendal Spencer reached base for SSU because of catcher interference and stole second. A single by Hakem Smith allowed Spencer to reach third and a sacrifice fly to right field by Desmore Joseph II was deep enough to allow Spencer to come home to cut Savannah State's deficit to 9-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Tampa scored five times on three hits to push their advantage to 14-2.

Both teams had runners in scoring position in the fifth but neither could find home plate.

Savannah State got some momentum in the sixth and seventh innings as they closed their gap in half.

Hunter Bradshaw led off the sixth with a double down the left field line and Smith was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base in a double steal for Joseph whose single up the middle brought home Bradshaw and Smith. A single to center field by William Mahoney IV allowed Joseph to score to draw SSU within 14-5.

Spencer was hit by a pitch in the seventh and scored on a home run by Smith to make the score 14-7.

Tampa (44-7) scored twice in the eighth for the final runs of the contest.

Joseph had three RBI for the Tigers while Prinkleton collected three hits. Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice and driving home two runs. Spencer, a Tampa native, scored twice and stole a pair of bases.
