SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State played their regular season finale on April 23, 2024 by splitting a non-conference double-header with Brewton-Parker in games played at the SSU Softball Field.
Savannah State won the first game 10-2 but lost the second contest by a score of 7-3.
In the first game,
Phaedra Smith, Haley Caroll and
Caleigh Powell all had three hits to help SSU earn the win
Smith hit a double in the first inning and scored when
Ziahya Griffin reached base because of an error by the shortstop.
Powell hit a single to left field in the second inning and came home following a triple by
Milani Dunning. Smith followed with a single to left field that allowed Dunning to score for a 3-0 lead.
The Barons scored a run in the top of the third but Savannah State answered in the bottom of the inning when Carroll led off with a infield single and scored on a ground-out by Madison Sarling-Martin.
SSU added a pair of runs in the fourth to go ahead 6-1 as
LaTaviona Parke hit a double that brought home
Kayla Ragins and Dunning.
Brewton-Parker scored a run in the top of the sixth to get within 6-2 but the Lady Tigers put the game away with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Demonee Miles laid down and bunt and scored on a triple by Dunning and a single by Smith brought home Dunning. A single by Carroll and a walk to Griffin loaded the bases for Starling-Martin and Powell who both hit RBI singles to give Savannah State a 10-2 advantage.
Dunning and Parke had two hits each. Dunning scored three times while Smith and Carroll cross home plate twice. Driving in two runs apiece were Dunning, Smith, Parke and Starling-Martin.
Rosa Carnesale was the winning pitcher and recorded two strikeouts.
In the second game, Brewton-Parker raced out to a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers used a sacrifice fly by
LaTaviona Parke that scored
Demonee Miles in the bottom of the third for their first run of the game.
The Barons went ahead 6-1 in the top of the fourth before SSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to slice their deficit to 6-3.
Ziahya Griffin led off with a single to center field and advanced to third on a double by
Madison Starling-Martin. A ground-out by
Rosa Carnesale allowed Griffin to score and a single to the outfield by Miles brought home Starling-Martin.
BPC scored the final run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Savannah State didn't help their cause with four errors which led to three unearned runs.
Miles went 3-for-3 at the plate for SSU while
Zarria Smith was the losing pitcher.
Savannah State ends the regular season with a 14-27 record while going 9-15 in the SIAC.
