SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State dropped a double-header to Fort Valley State on March 28, 2024 at the SSU Softball Field.
The Wildcats won the opener 11-2 and completed the sweep with a 16-8 victory in the second game.
Milani Dunning hit a single to left field and scored when
LaTaviona Parke singled to left field to give SSU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the first game.
Fort Valley State answered back with nine runs as they scored six times in the second, twice in the third and once in the fourth inning for a 9-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, with two outs,
Haley Carroll hit a single to left field and came home when
Ziahya Griffin hit a double to right field to make the score 9-2.
The Wildcats closed the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Savannah State stranded ten runners on base. The Lady Tigers left the bases full in the first and sixth innings and left two on base in the fourth inning.
Rosa Carnesale was the losing pitcher but struck out two batters.
Jennifer Ramirez had four hits for FVSU and Rachel Clark was the winning pitcher.
The Lady Tigers had 11 hits in the second game but also made five errors.
After two and a half innings, FVSU led 6-0 but Savannah State scored five times in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to 6-5 with
LaTaviona Parke hitting a three-run double and
Haley Carroll and
Madison Starling-Martin both hitting RBI singles.
Both teams added two runs in the fourth inning. Taylor Orr hit a two-run double for Fort Valley State while
Milani Dunning and
Haley Carroll both crossed home plate for SSU.
The Wildcats tacked on four more runs in the fifth to increase their advantage to 12-7.
In the top of the sixth, FVSU scored three more runs to up their lead to 15-7.
But in the bottom half of the sixth,
LaTaviona Parke hit a double that scored
Neveah Ford for SSU's final run of the day.
The Wildcats added a run in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring on the afternoon.
Haley Carol went 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI,
LaTaviona Parke had two hits and four RBI,
Milani Dunning had two hits and two runs and
Neveah Ford scored twice.
Madison Starling-Martin was tagged with the pitching loss.
Once again, Jennifer Ramirez had four hits for the Wildcats and Taylor Watson was the winning pitcher.
Savannah State (10-21, 6-10 SIAC) and FVSU (19-12, 13-3 SIAC) will close out their series on March 29 at the SSU Softball Field at 12 noon.
