SSU Drops Double-Header To Brewton-Parker

MOUNT VERNON, Ga.- Savannah State took on Brewton-Parker in a non-conference double-header on March 19, 2024 and fell in both games by scores of 7-0 and 7-5. Both contests were played at the BPC Softball Field.
 
Savannah State could only manage four hits in the opener. The Lady Tigers had runners in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings and ended the game with four runners left on base.
 
SSU's best chance to score came in the fifth inning when Zarria Smith led off with a single and advanced to second base on a ground-out by Caleigh Powell. A single by Pheadra Smith allowed Zarria Smith to go to third base. Phaedra Smith was caught stealing for the second out and the top of the inning ended on Neveah Ford's line out to the first baseman.
 
Neveah Ford, Ziahya Griffin, Zarria Smith and Phaedra Smith all had one hit for the Lady Tigers. Zarria Smith was the losing pitcher.
 
The Barons scored a run in the first and second innings, two in the third innings and three more in the fifth inning.
 
Tori Wright and Taylor Elliot both hit two-run doubles for BPC. Natalie O'Neal was the winning pitcher.
 
Brewton-Parker scored four times in the first inning in the second game.
 
SSU answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a two-run double by Rosa Carnesale to slice their deficit in half.
 
BPC scored a run in the third and fourth innings to increase their lead to 6-2.
 
In the top of the sixth, Savannah State loaded the bases when Phaedra Smith singled, Rosa Carnesale was hit by a pitch and Neveah Ford hit a single. Zorianna Ford hit a two-run single that scored Phaedra Smith and Rosa Carnesale. Neveah Ford stole home to cut the Brewton-Parker lead to 6-5.
 
The Barons scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-5 win.
 
Neveah Ford, Zorianna Ford,LaTaviona Parke, Ziahya Griffin and Phaedra Smith all had two hits for SSU. Zorianna Ford and Rosa Carnesale both drove in two runs apiece.
 
Rosa Carnesale was the losing pitcher.
 
SSU left nine runners on base in the game and made four errors.
 
Ashley Wilson had three hits for BPC while Kira Altman was the winning pitcher for the Barons (14-8).
 
Savannah State (9-17) will start a eight-game home stand with a three-game series with Clark Atlanta on March 23-24.
