Tigers Drop Double OT Road Decision At Central State

WILBERFORCE, Oh.- Savannah State had their three game winning streak snapped with a 74-72 double overtime loss to Central State on in an SIAC road contest Monday night.

The contest, which drew 1,800 fans at Beacom-Lewis Gym saw Jerry Maxinaud's layup with one second left in the second half force overtime with the score tied at 58. And in the first overtime period, a 3-pointer by Qua King with 11 seconds left forced a second overtime period with the teams knotted at 65 points each.

Savannah State was down 72-68 in the second overtime before Jaydon Cousin made a layup and King hit two free throws to tie the game at 72 with 56 seconds left.

The final points would be scored by Central State from the free throw line with three seconds showing on the clock.

King would lead Savannah State with a game high 21 points while Cousin came off the bench to add 14 points and five rebounds. Jeremiah Barze chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.

The Tigers trailed by as many as nine points in the first period before a 3-pointer by Kasai Fontanez, a layup by Ayjay Plain and a jumper from Barze cut their deficit to 24-21 with 1:01 left in the period.

Central State led 26-21 at intermission.

A 3-pointer from Javonte Landy allowed SSU to get within 27-26 early in the second period and a layup by Cousin tied the game at 30 at the 14:05 mark.

The rest of the period saw the teams tied six times with nobody leading by more than three points.

The Marauders led 56-53 with 29 seconds left but a 3-pointer by King tied the game. Central State went ahead with a layup with seven seconds left before Maxinaud hit his only layup of the game with one second remaining to force an extra five minutes.

With 1:50 left in the first overtime, CSU led 65-60 but the Tigers responded with a layup by Cousin and a 3-pointer by King to tie the game and extend play by another five minutes.

Landy finished the game with eight points and Fontanez had five.Plain recorded six rebounds, six assists and three steals to go with his four points. Michael Swift added four points, Maxinaud had two and Damerius Puttman scored one point.

SSU ended the game shooting 41.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc.

The Tigers (3-3, 1-1 SIAC) will begin a three game home stand on December 7 against Miles.
