BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Savannah State closed out the 2024 portion of their schedule with a 67-50 loss to Miles on Saturday afternoon.
The crowd gathered in the Knox-Windham Gym at Fair Park Arena saw the Lady Tigers get off to a hot start as they led 19-14 after one quarter of play, shooting 53.3 percent from the field while making both free throw attempts.
SSU led by as many as eight in the opening quarter but saw their lead dwindle to 16-14 with 1:46 left before
Jayden Boykin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to increase their advantage to five.
Miles tied the game at 23 with 5:42 left in the second quarter but a 3-pointer by
Myasia Jones at the 4:07 mark gave SSU the lead again.
Ahead 28-27,
Kayla Grant hit two free throws with eight seconds left to send Savannah State into the half with a 30-27 lead.
The Golden Bears started the second half with a 12-1 run to take a 39-31 lead with 6:23 left in the third quarter.
A jumper and a layup by
Amani Hamilton drew SSU within four but Miles led 48-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Savannah State started the fourth quarter with a jumper from Hamilton and a free throw by
Alayah Birch to make the score 48-44 but the Golden Bears responded by scoring the next 11 points to get some separation and a 59-44 lead with 3:44 remaining.
The Lady Tigers trailed by as many as 19 late in the contest before
Sanai Chisholm hit a jumper with eight seconds left for the final points of the game.
Hamilton had six rebounds and a game-high 13 points while Grant chipped in 10 points and a pair of steals.
K'yla Hankerson had eight points followed by Birch and Chisholm who scored four points each and Boykin, Jones and
Mya Byrd who all scored three points.
Jazmin Thornton had two points.
Byrd had five assists and Birch had four.
Savannah State will enter the Christmas break with a two-game losing skid but have a 6-6 overall record and a 2-4 mark in conference play.
The Lady Tigers will ring in the new year on January 4, hosting by Tuskegee in an SIAC matchup inside Tiger Arena at 2 p.m.
