Lady Tigers Win Streak Snapped With Road Loss At Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala.- Savannah State saw their three game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, following their 77-60 setback to Spring Hill.

The crowd in the Outlaw Recreation Center saw Jayden Boykin begin the game with a layup to give the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Spring Hill answered with eight straight points to go ahead by six.

SSU's deficit climbed to nine with 2:11 left in the opening quarter before finishing the quarter with a 7-2 mini run to slice the Badgers lead to 19-15.

Spring Hill went ahead by six early in the second quarter but Savannah State was able to get within 23-22 at the 6:45mark.

The teams continued to trade baskets and the game remained tight.

With 2:49 left in the first half and Spring Hill holing a 29-28 edge, the Badgers finished the second quarter with a 8-2 run to take a 37-30 lead into halftime.

Savannah State was on the short end of a 13-2 run to begin the third quarter as they fell behind 50-32 with 4:40remaining in the quarter.

SSU was able to trim their deficit to ten but ended the quarter down 56-45.

With just under eight minutes remaining in the game, the Lady Tigers were down by single digits (58-49) but Spring Hill answered with a 11-3 run to stretch their lead to 17 with 3:02 showing on the clock.

Savannah State never got any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The Lady Tigers shot 53.9 percent from the floor in the first quarter and finished the game shooting 40.4 percent. SSU only made one of seven 3-point attempts and were 17 of 21 from the free throw line.

SSU only had eight turnovers but were out-rebounded 39 to 26.

Amani Hamilton and Alayah Birch both scored 19 points for the Lady Tigers and combined for 13 rebounds with Hamilton grabbing eight.

Mya Byrd added nine points and three assists while K'yla Hankerson had five points and four rebounds.

Boykin chipped in four points and Kayla Grant and Sanai Chisholm added two points each.

Savannah State (6-5, 2-3 SIAC) will close the books on the 2024 portion of their schedule with a trip to Miles on December 21.
