Historic Season For Savannah State Ends With Semifinal Loss To Spring Hill

ALBANY, Ga.- The Savannah State volleyball team saw their record-breaking season come to an end with a straight set loss to top-seeded Spring Hill on November 22, 2024 at the Cricket Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships. The match was played at the HPER Gym on the campus of Albany State.

SSU fell to the Badgers by scores of 20-25, 5-25 and 21-25.

The loss also snapped Savannah State's five match winning streak.

The Lady Tigers were led by Amiyah Walker who finished the match with 13 assists and 13 digs.

In the opening set, SSU fell behind 3-1 before a kill by Savannah Everett and a attack error by Spring Hill knotted the score at three apiece. The Badgers responded with four straight points to go ahead by four. Another kill by Everett pulled Savannah State within three but they would not be able to get any closer the remainder of the first set.

Savannah State could not get their offense in gear in the second set. Ayanna Klaiber-Norris and Aaliyah Saunders had the only kills for SSU in the set.

The Lady Tigers were more competitive in the third set that had six ties. Tied at 5-5, SSU put together a 5-1 stretch to go ahead by four as Jasmine Nettles and Everett had one kill apiece and Saniaa Dickey had a pair of service aces. Spring Hill chipped away at SSU's lead and was able to tie the set at 11 but the Lady Tigers answered with one kill each by Nettles and Curry along with a error by the Badgers to go ahead 14-11. Spring Hill tied the set at 14 but a kill by Klaiber-Norris gave Savannah State a one point lead. The Badgers answered with a 6-0 run that saw them pull ahead 15-20. Down 19-24, SSU used a kill by Everett and a service ace by Dickey to get within 21-24 but an attack error by Savannah State gave Spring Hill the win in the set and match.

Everett had nine kills for Savannah State while Nettles finished with eight and nine digs.Curry had five kills to go with her eight assists and seven digs. 

Kloe Ludy chipped in ten digs and four assists, Mina Ezikpe had two blocks, Dickey had four aces, Saunders finished with three blocks while Klaiber-Norris contributed two kills.

Savannah State ends their season setting new marks in single season overall and conference wins.

The Lady Tigers were 15-9 overall and posted a 13-6.

It was the final match is a SSU uniform for Curry, Nettles, Ludy and O'Niece Roberts.
