Allen's Buzzer Beater Lifts SSU Past Clark Atlanta, 56-55

SAVANNAH, Ga.- On January 4, 2024, Nyla Allen hit a shot at the buzzer to give the Savannah State University women's basketball team a 75-73 win over LeMoyne-Owen College, in a game played in Memphis Tennessee.
 
On January 22, Allen repeated her heroic effort with a game-winning shot that carried the Lady Tigers to a 56-55 win over Clark Atlanta University in a game played at Tiger Arena.
 
With just over four minutes left in the game, Mya Byrd hit a 3-pointer that gave SSU a 52-51 lead.
 
The Panthers answered with a layup by Corriana Evans and a pair of free throws from Trinity Jones to go ahead 55-52 with 3:04 remaining.
 
With 2:11 left, Ta'Quasia Lampkin hit two free throws for Savannah State to draw the Lady Tigers to within one at 55-54.
 
CAU's Brooklyn McKinley attempted a game-sealing 3-pointer with seven seconds left but it was blocked by Amari Heard.
 
Following a timeout by SSU, Allen got the ball and drove to the basket where she put up her shot and was fouled by McKinley as the buzzer sounded.
 
Referees determined that the shot was good and Savannah State claimed their eighth win in a row, much to the delight of the crowd of 1,710.
 
During the preseason, Clark Atlanta was predicted to finish first in the Eastern Division of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while SSU was picked to finish second.
 
Savannah State remains in first place in the conference's Eastern Division standings with a 8-2 mark as they improve to 11-3 overall.
 
Heard had seven rebounds and six steals to go along with her game-high 16 points for Savannah State while Allen scored 13 points and had a game-high four assists.
 
Clark Atlanta held a 9-6 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter but the Lady Tigers responded and finished the quarter with a 8-2 surge to go ahead 14-11.
 
SSU led by five early in the second quarter and after the Panthers got within 18-14, Allen scored seven points for Savannah State as they ended the first half with a 11-3 run to take a 29-17 advantage into intermission.
 
A jumper by Allen, early in the third quarter pushed the SSU lead to 17 and when Clark Atlanta whittled their deficit down to 10, the Lady Tigers answered with Jacquece Alston hitting a jumper and a free throw.  After a jumper by Heard, Alston stole the ball from CAU and converted it into a fast break layup to give Savannah State a commanding 41-24 lead with 6:42 left in the quarter.
 
Down by 17 with 4:46 left in the third frame, Clark Atlanta went on a 17-2 run to slice the Savannah State advantage to 45-43 with 41 seconds left.
 
CAU entered the fourth quarter down by three and opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups by Evans to go ahead 48-47.
 
The remainder of the game featured five lead changes with the final one coming on Allen's buzzer beater.
 
Lampkin had 12 rebounds for the Lady Tigers to compliment her seven points. Alston chipped in 10 points while Byrd scored seven and Jashiyah Jones added two.
 
The game was only tied once but had ten lead changes.
 
Clark Atlanta (8-8, 5-6 SIAC) received 13 points from Evans and Atreonia Garner.
 
Savannah State will start a three-game road trip on January 27 when they head down Interstate 95 to face Edward Waters University at 3 p.m.
