Lady Tigers Winning Streak Snapped By Edward Waters, 60-59

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Savannah State women's basketball team had their eight game winning streak snapped on January 27, 2024, after suffering a 60-59 loss to conference rival Edward Waters. The contest was played in the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex, before a crowd of 566 fans.
 
Before losing the EWU, Savannah State's last setback came on December 4, 2023 to Miles.
 
In a game that had three ties and three lead changes, SSU made 11 of 16 shots from the field and connected on all four 3-point attempts in the second quarter but went cold in the fourth quarter, shooting  just 23 percent from the floor.
 
Savannah State led by as many as 27 points in the second quarter and ended the third quarter ahead by 13. EWU fought back in the fourth quarter, using a 19-3 run to take a 62-59 lead with 2:54 remaining.
 
With Edward Waters ahead 64-61, SSU's Mya Byrd hit a 3-pointer with 2:01 left to tie the game at 64.
 
Byrd added a pair free throws with  1:12 left to give Savannah State a 66-64 advantage but EWU scored the next six points. Kyana Johnson made a layup with 56 seconds left and six seconds later Tatum Hayes hit two free throws for a 68-66 Edward Waters lead.
 
After a timeout, Jaquece Alston missed a jumper for Savannah State which was followed by a turnover.
 
Alston stole the ball from Edward Waters on their next possession but she could not convert it into any points.
 
Sha'Kwanza Brown hit two free throws for EWU with three seconds left for a four point lead.
 
The game ended with a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Savannah State's Amari Heard but it would not be enough.
 
Heard had 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals for SSU while Byrd also scored 19 points.
 
Allen, a Jacksonville native, added 10 points and six assists. Alston also scored 10 points, and three steals while going three of four from 3-point range.
 
Jashiyah Jones had five points for SSU, Kendra Williams had four points and Ta'Quasia Lampkin was held to two points and six rebounds.
 
Savannah State opened the game with five straight points, getting a jumper from Heard and a 3-pointer from Jones.
 
Edward Waters cut their deficit to 9-7 but SSU answered with two free throws from Allen, a 3-pointer from Byrd and a free throw by Alston  to increase their lead to eight with 1:57 left.
 
Savannah State led by as many as nine late in the quarter before EWU's Johnson made a jumper with 16 seconds left to make the score 17-10.
 
SSU scored their first ten points of the second quarter to grab a 27-10 advantage with 6:39 left.
 
After EWU's Imani Harris made two free throws to get within 15, Savannah State responded with a 16-4 run to increase their lead to 43-16 with 1:32 left.
 
Edward Waters entered the fourth quarter down by 19 but used a 11-1 spurt to start the final quarter to whittle SSU's advantage to three with just over five minutes remaining.
 
Allen answered with a jumper for Savannah State with 4:02 left for a five point lead.
 
The remainder of the game would be back and fourth.
 
Jourdan Avery had 14 points for Edward Waters, who snapped their eight game losing streak, to improve to 5-13 overall and 3-8 in the SIAC).
 
Savannah State (11-4, 8-3 SIAC) will continue their road swing with a trip to Allen on January 19 for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
