Tigers Lose To Morehouse, 68-66

SAVANNAH, Ga.-  Savannah State went the final three minutes without making a field goal in a 68-66 loss to Morehouse on January 20, 2024 in a game played in Tiger Arena.
 
The loss, SSU's first home loss of the season, drops the Tigers record to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
 
Morehouse led 63-62 with 4:11 left but a jumper and a free by Qua King gave Savannah State a 65-63 lead with 3:06 showing on the clock.
 
A free throw by Ayjay Plain at the 2:40 mark increased the Tigers lead to three.
 
The Maroon Tigers answered when Cedric Taylor made a layup with 2:16 remaining and hit a pair of free throws with 1:23 left to give the visitors from Atlanta, Georgia a 67-66 edge.
 
Taylor went back to the free throw line for Morehouse with ten seconds left. After missing his first attempt, he connected on the second shot to put the Maroon Tigers ahead 68-66.
 
Plain attempted what would be a game-winning three pointer for SSU with one second left but it was blocked by Taylor. Savannah State's Javonte Landy got the rebound and heaved up a 3-point shot at the buzzer but it fell short.
 
It was a tight game that featured seven ties and 12 lead changes.
 
Savannah State led 12-6 after six minutes of play in the opening period.
 
After Morehouse sliced their deficit to 16-13, SSU answered with a free throw by King, a layup by Jordan Mikel and a 3-pointer by Plain to open up their largest lead of the afternoon at 22-13 with 9:26 left.
 
In the final three minutes of the half, Morehouse used a 3-pointer by Taylor and two more by Demetrius Calip to go ahead and take a 38-36 halftime lead.
 
Morehouse would go ahead by four early in the second half but Savannah State always stayed in reach and took a 45-44 lead with 17:08 left thanks to a jumper by King and a 3-pointer by Zion Davis.
 
For the last 15 minutes of play, the game had ties at 46, 52, 54, 56, 58, 62 and 66.
 
Down 58-56, SSU's Chancellor Wilson made a layup, two free throws and a jumper in a span of about two minutes to give the Tigers a 62-58 lead with just under six minutes remaining.
 
The Maroon Tigers would score five unanswered points to grab a 63-62 lead at the 4:11 mark before King's jumper and free throw put SSU back in front 65-63 with 3:06 left.
 
Plain had a game-high 15 points for Savannah State to go with his five assists, sour steals and four rebounds.
 
King added 14 points, five rebounds and four blocks while Davis went four for four from the field and hit a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws to finish with 12 points.
 
Rounding out the Tiger scorers were Landy (8), Wilson (8), Jordan (6), Michael Swift (2) and Austin Lewis (1).
 
SSU shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and 48.9 percent for the game.
 
Savannah State had 27 points of 19 Morehouse turnovers and outscored the much bigger Maroon Tigers in the paint 30 to 22.
 
Morehouse (11-5, 9-1 SIAC) received 12 points each from Taylor, Calip and Amahn Decker.
 
SSU will host Clark Atlanta at Tiger Arena on January 22 at 7:30 p.m.
