Lady Tigers Escape Sweep Against Benedict

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State softball escaped the sweep in a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series with Benedict this past weekend.

In the opening game of the series, Savannah State mounted a huge rally for a big win.

Benedict jumped out to a massive lead early, platting 10 runs in the first two innings. Into the fourth inning, Savannah State trailed 5-11.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kaytrie-ana Bradshaw singled to reach. Following a flyout, Samantha Morales blasted a big home run over the left field wall, scoring Bradshaw and cutting Benedict's lead to 11-7.

Later in the inning, Demonee Miles hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Alisyn Ferrell who reached on an error. The three runs spark some momentum for the Lady Tigers.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Savannah State defense stranded two Benedict runners in the top of the sixth. Ferrell got Ericka Young to strikeout for the third out, ending the chances at more runs for the visitors.

The momentum shift carried over to the bottom of the frame. Morales sparked the Lady Tigers offense with a lead-off solo home run to start the inning.

Daxne Carrera was walked and Brianna Cox and Miles both reached on singles to load the bases with one out. Rahkell Holden was walked, scoring Carrera to tie the game at 11 all.

Later, Kayla McDuffie singled, scoring Cox. Bradshaw brought in Holden and Miles on a single through the left side for SSU's 13th run. Kylie Rhymer tacked on the sixth run of the inning, scoring McDuffie on a sac fly to right, giving SSU a 14-11 lead into the seventh inning.

The SSU defense went to work, forcing two flyouts and a strikeout to end the game in the top of the seventh. Savannah State took game one 14-11.

The Lady Tigers racked up 15 hits in the win. Bradshaw was 3-for-5 on the day while McDuffie, Morales, Ferrell, Carrera, and Cox each had two hits in the win.

Benedict again got out to an early lead in game two on Saturday, scoring 11 runs in the first two innings. Savannah State was stalled at the plate. They scored one run in the first inning and stranded four runners with five hits over four innings.

Benedict ran away with the game in the fifth inning, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits for a 26-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. SSU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame behind a doubles from McDuffie, Rhymer, and Ferrell. But it wasn't enough to overcome the massive scoring rout from Benedict. The Lady Tigers fell 3-26.

In the final game on Sunday, Benedict again opened the scoring early, platting three runs in the first inning. They tacked on two more in the third for a 5-0 lead and then one more in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.

Savannah State again rallied late.

Cox got things started in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off single. Lead Dudley singled to left to reach and both moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice coupled with an error that loaded the basses.  McDuffie walked to score Cox.

Bradshaw brought in a run on a sacrifice fly. Later, Morales platted two more runs on a blast to left field. Ferrell brought in two more runs on a single to right, tying the game at 6-all as the Lady Tigers battled for a win.

In the top of the sixth, Olivia Townsend blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall lifting Benedict to a 9-6 lead. The score would hold as SSU stranded two runners in the bottom of the inning and despite a double from Ferrell were unable to score in the seventh.

Morales and Ferrell each had two hits in the loss to lead the Lady Tigers at the plate.

Savannah State moved to 7-18 overall and 6-13 in SIAC action after the series with Benedict. They close the regular season this weekend with a three-game, conference series against Edward Waters. First pitch in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
