Softball Closes Out 2023 Campaign

The 2023 Savannah State Softball team.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Rebuilding years can be tough, but Savannah State softball is on the right track.

The Lady Tigers closed out the 2023 campaign this past weekend with three losses to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division Champions' Edward Waters.

Savannah State finished Amber Hallman's first season at the helm 7-21 and 6-16 in conference action. Their conference record wasn't strong enough to earn a post-season berth.

"In softball, you're going to make errors, but for us, it's going to be, how quickly can you stop the bleeding?" Hallman said in a preseason feature story. "How quickly can you bounce back?

"We have a very young team, but it's an eager team, a very scrappy team," Hallman said. "I'm grateful for them and the work they put in."

Hallman, a 2017 Savannah State softball alumna, knew this first year would be a transition after being hired in August. But she has the right pieces in place—getting meritorious output from several freshman this year—and will add to her roster in the off-season, looking towards the 2024 season and a post-season conference berth.

This weekend, against one of the best teams in the conference, the Lady Tigers battled hard.

In game one on Friday, Edward Waters put up a single run in the first inning, but some stellar pitching and defense from SSU held the score close through four full innings.

Edward Waters broke the stalemate in the fifth with five runs taking a 6-0 lead. Facing some strong pitching, the Lady Tigers struggled at the plate, managing only a single hit.

Veteran senior Alisyn Ferrell pitched a full 6.0 innings for the Lady Tigers. She allowed four earned runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Edward Waters' Jodasea Peterson was tagged with the pitching win after a full 7.0 innings of work, allowing no runs on one hit, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

In game two of Friday's doubleheader, Savannah State did not go so quietly into the night.  Edward Waters started off strong, spreading out seven runs over the first three innings.

But scrappy SSU fired back with a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and one more in the seventh putting up eight hits and taking advantage of four Edward Waters' errors. The late rally fell short, however, as Edward Waters sealed up game two 9-5.

Kayla McDuffie and Demonee Miles had strong outings at the plate, each going 2-for-3.

In the final game of the series, on Saturday, Edward Waters came out firing. They spread out eight runs over the first two innings.

Savannah State escaped the shutout with a single run in the fifth inning in a late rally attempt that fell short. Edward Waters sealed up the series sweep and SIAC East Division title with a 9-1 win.

At the end of the rebuilding season, the future is bright for Savannah State.

First year player Samantha Morales was a superb addition to the team. Morales led the hitting this year, batting .378 with 28 hits, eight doubles, three home runs, and 19 RBI. Just behind her was freshman Kaytrie-ana Bradshaw, who batted .372 on the year with 29 hits and 18 RBI.

Newcomers Ziahya Griffin, Miles, and Kylie Rhymer all finished with strong seasons. Griffin batted .321 on the year, while Miles hit .250 and Rhymer hit .266.

The Lady Tigers will look to strengthen their pitching staff into next year with the loss of starter Ferrell to graduation. Morales will be a key part of that as well as freshman Noelle Scott.

"I'm blessed to be here and in the position I'm in," said Hallman. "It helps to create a culture for the young ladies, knowing that I was in their shoes not too long ago."
