Lady Tigers Drop SIAC Series To Albany State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State dropped a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series with Albany State on the Lady Tiger Softball field this weekend, but not without a good fight.

On Friday, in game one of the series, Albany State opened with a massive 8-run first inning. Savannah State, undeterred, went to work in the second inning.

Alisyn Ferrell singled to reach and Ziahya Griffth was hit by a pitch. Rahkell Holden walked to load the basses. Demonee Miles hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ferrell. Kaytrie-ana Bradshaw plated Griffen on a single to left-center to put two on the board for SSU.

Albany State went on to plate six more runs over the ensuing three innings for a 14-3 rout of the Lady Tigers.

Game two of the series, and game one of a doubleheader on Saturday morning, was not the same story.

Behind some stellar pitching from Ferrell, the Lady Tigers played Albany State tough. The visitors put up one run in each of the opening innings. In the bottom of the third, Holden scored Bradshaw on a single to right center.

Albany State responded with four more runs in the fourth, for a 6-1 lead, but SSU wasn't done.  In the bottom of the frame, Samantha Morales singled to reach and Griffen brought her home on a two-run homer to right field, cutting into the visitor's lead.

With a little momentum, Savannah State platted two more runs in the fifth inning on three hits. Into the sixth, SSU trailed Albany State 5-6. The Golden Rams planted one run on one hit following two costly SSU errors in the top of the sixth.

In the seventh, Albany State plated four more runs on five hits to push out to an 11-5 lead. The Lady Tigers fought back in the bottom of the final inning with three big hits that scored four runs as they fell in game two 9-11.

SSU had 12 hits in the loss, two from Kylie Rhymer, Daxne Carrera, Morales, Griffen, and Leah Dudley. Ferrell pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowing only six earned runs with four walks and two strikeouts.

Albany State started off the final game of the series in similar fashion to game one, scoring five runs in the opening inning. They tacked on three more in the second and two more in the third for a 10-0 lead into the fourth.

Savannah State platted four runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to avoid the shutout, falling 8-13 in the final game. Bradshaw, Kayla McDuffie, Griffen, Morales, an Dudley all recorded two hits in the loss.
