Softball Splits On Day One Of SIAC Crossover

JASPER, Ala. – Savannah State softball split on day one of the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Crossover, Saturday.  
 
The SIAC Crossover, hosted by Spring Hill College in Jasper, Alabama pits SIAC East Division teams against SIAC West Division teams over the course of three days.
 
On day one, Savannah State fell to Kentucky State 4-7 to open the day and then picked up a huge 18-0 win against LeMoyne-Owen in the second game.
 
The Lady Tigers started out strong against Kentucky State with Alisyn Ferrell pitching a dime. In the top of the first inning, Kkaytrie-ana Bradshaw singled to reach and Kylie Rhymer walked. Bradshaw stole second and then stole third to get into scoring position.
 
Daxne Carrera brought her home on a groundout for the first score of the day. Later, Rhymer scored on a passed ball to lift SSU to a 2-0 lead early on.
 
Following a scoreless second, Kentucky State found some room to work in the third, scoring four runs on three hits for a 4-2 lead. The Thorobreds platted three more runs in the fourth for a 7-2 lead into the fifth.
 
Rhymer blasted a double in the top of the fifth, scoring Demonee Miles who was walked. Carrera scored Rhymer on another double to cut KSU's lead to 7-4—the score would stand as the final as both teams failed to get a hit or score in the final two innings.
 
Ferrell went a full 6.0 innings in the circle, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits with seven walks and six strikeouts. Kentucky State's Kayla West earned her fourth win with 7.0 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
 
In the top of the first of the second game on Saturday, Savannah State had an extraordinary inning. The Lady Tigers batted around the order three times, scoring 15 runs on nine hits for a gigantic lead.
 
Savannah State tacked on a one more in the second and two more in the fifth for the final 18-0 rout of LeMoyne-Owen.
 
Samantha Morales pitched 5.0 innings to earn her second win of the season. She allowed no earned runs on one hit with one walk and six strikeouts. Morales led SSU at the plate as well, going 4-for-4 with two doubles. Ziahya Griffen was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double.
