Softball Drops Non-Conference DH To Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, Ga.– Savannah State softball dropped a mid-week, non-conference doubleheader to the College of Coastal Georgia on Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers fell to 5-12 overall with the two losses. Savannah State faced off with Coastal Georgia for the second time this season, hoping to get a win after two losses in their first meeting in early February.

In game one, the Mariners spread out six runs over the opening two innings behind eight hits for an early lead.

In the top of the third, Demonee Miles hit a lead-off single to reach. Miles was pushed into scoring position off an error by the third baseman that put Kayla McDuffie on as well. Kaytrie-ana Bradshaw reached on a fielder's choice that saw Miles score.

Savannah State only managed to get one more runner on-base in the final three innings as Coastal tacked on three more runs for a run-rule 9-1 win in the sixth inning.

Looking to shift the momentum in game two, Bradshaw opened the game with a home run to left field in the second at-bat. Kylie Rhymer reached on a double to left and Alisyn Ferrell reached on an error. Samantha Morales brought them both home on a huge double to left giving SSU an early 3-0 lead.

Coastal Georgia responded in the bottom of the frame with six runs on four hits, including a three-run homer. The Mariners tacked on four more runs in the second to extend their lead to 10-3.

Savannah State put up two more runs in the third, to cut into Coastal Georgia's 10-5 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, however, Coastal Georgia took a massive lead behind seven more runs on five hits. The game was ended in the fifth due to run-rule with the home team leading 17-5.

Morales led the Lady Tigers at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Walk-on Brianna Cox went 2-for-3 on the day.

Savannah State returns to action and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule this weekend with a three-game road series against Clark Atlanta.
