Softball Picks Up Road Win At Fort Valley

FORT VALLEY, Ga.– In a rebuilding year, Savannah State softball picked up a key road win this past weekend.
 
The Lady Tigers faced off against Fort Valley State in a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series. Following a tough 4-13 rout in game one, the Lady Tigers bounced back with a strong game two on Saturday.
 
Alisyn Ferrell had a stellar outing, going a full 7.0 innings in the circle leading her team to a 4-0 shutout win. She allowed three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
 
The game remained scoreless into the third inning. Walk-on Brianna Cox single in the top of the third to reach. Following a strikeout, Kayla McDuffie single to reach. Kaytrie-ana Bradshaw brought them both home on a single to right to give SSU a 2-0 lead.
 
In the fourth, the Lady Tigers tacked on another run, thanks to a double from Ziahya Griffen that scored Taliyah Stewart who was pinch running for Ferrell who singled to reach.
 
The Savannah State defense held Fort Valley from scoring with some stellar work in the field. Fort Valley stranded the only five runners they got on base in the game.
 
SSU tacked on another run in the seventh behind a double from Kylie Rhymer that scored McDuffie to seal up the final score.

Fort Valley blanked the Lady Tigers in the final game of the series on Sunday with an 8-0 win, racking up 12 hits. Caprice Johnson earned the pitching win after 5.0 innings of work. She allowed no earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts.

Savannah State is 5-10 overall this year and 5-8 in SIAC action.

The Lady Tigers return to action on March 22 with a non-conference road game against College of Coastal Georgia. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
SSU heads to Atlanta this weekend to face Clark Atlanta in a three-game SIAC series on Saturday and Sunday.
