Women's Tennis Take Two At SIAC Roundup

MOBILE, Ala. – Savannah State women's tennis picked up two wins this past weekend at the first of two Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Roundups this season.  
 
The Lady Tigers beat Fort Valley State 4-3 in the second game of the roundup and capped off the weekend with a 6-1 win over Lane College on Sunday.
 
The first SIAC Roundup was hosted by Spring Hill in Mobile, Ala. The second will take place in Columbia, S.C. March 30-April 2.
 
Savannah State dropped matches to Clark Atlanta (2-5), Benedict College (1-6), Spring Hill (1-6) and Albany State (1-6) through the weekend.
 
In their win against Fort Valley State on Friday, Gabrielle Benn defeated Samaar Davis in the first court of singles action, 6-2 and 6-1. In the third court, Padmasree Murugan beat Jordynn Middlebrooks 6-1, and 6-3.
 
Sunzahra Banks fell to Avery Harris, 0-6 and 1-6, in the third court of singles while Sarah Joachim lost to London Lawson (2-6, 1-6).
 
The Benn sisters cleaned up in the first court of doubles action, defeating Harris and Davis 6-4. In the second court, Murugan and Banks beat Dorelein and Middlebrooks 6-2.
 
On Sunday, Savannah State swept to a 6-1 win over Lane College, winning five courts in singles action and the two in doubles.
 
Amarlia Benn, playing in the first court, beat Britni Wilson 6-0 and 6-0. Murugan defeated Particia Harrell in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Banks defeated Helena Inamn 6-1 and 6-0 in the third court.
 
Playing in the fourth court of singles, Joachim beat Jayla Johnson 6-4 and 6-2. Stella Ekwalla beat Ariel Winston in the fifth court, 6-4 and 6-4.
 
Murugan and Banks teamed up for the first court of doubles, beating Winston and Harrell 6-0. In the second court, Amarlia Benn and Joachim topped Da'luana Lamaster and Inman 6-1.
 
Savannah State returns to action on March 8 on the Lady Tiger Tennis Courts. They host Drew University at 6 p.m.
