Softball Sweeps First SIAC Series

Hallman Earns First Win As Head Coach

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State softball swept Allen University this weekend in a three-game series on the Lady Tiger Softball Field to open the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule.

The Lady Tigers improved to 3-2 on the season and 3-0 in SIAC action with the three wins. New Head Coach Amber Hallman—a decorated SSU alumna softball player—also earned her first wins since taking over the program in August.

In game one of the series on Saturday, newcomer Noelle Scott pitched the Lady Tigers to a 9-1 run-rule victory. Scott pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Savannah State got things going early. In the bottom of the first inning, Ziahya Griffin doubled to center, scoring Kaytrie-ana Bradshaw and Daxne Carrera for an early 2-0 lead. Savannah State tacked on another run in the second and two more in the fourth.

Into the fifth inning, the Lady Tigers led 5-1. Lead-off hitter Demonee Miles singled, Scott singled, Kylie Rhymer singled and then the runs started pouring in. Rhymer scored, Scott scored, and Bradshaw scored.

Then Alisyn Ferrell singled to left and plated Carrera for the fourth run. Following the score, the umps called the game due to run-rule—eight run advantage after five innings—with one out and one runner on.

Game two on Saturday was much of the same. Ferrell pitched a gem for the Lady Tigers with 5.0 innings in the circle. She allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Savannah State put up five runs in the first two innings and in the fourth tacked on eight more for a 13-0 rout. Rahkell Holden led at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles. Carrera, Ferrell, and Samantha Morales each had two hits in the win.

In game three of the series on Sunday, Savannah State again broke free early at the plate. They scored five runs on a single hit in the first inning as Allen's pitching staff struggled to find the strike zone, registering three costly walks and several wild pitches that led to extra bases for SSU.

Leading 6-1 into the fifth inning, Holden led off with a double to left center. Miles singled to the same spot, scoring Holden. Later, Rhymer singled scoring Miles.

Carrera ended the game again with a triple to right center, scoring Rhymer and Bradshaw—who also singled—for the fourth run of the inning and a 10-1 lead. The umps called the game after Bradshaw scored with no outs and one runner on base.

Moreles pitched a solid game for the Lady Tigers. She went 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Bradshaw and Carrera each had two hits in the win.

Savannah State returns to action on their home field this weekend with three-game SIAC series against Albany State. First pitch is set for Friday, March 3 at 2 p.m. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
