Women's Tennis Open 2023 Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's tennis opened the 2023 season this past weekend. The Lady Tigers hosted five Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) teams in a cluster on the Lady Tiger Tennis Courts.
 
Savannah State opened the weekend on Friday with a match against Fort Valley State. The match was halted due to rain. They picked up Saturday morning and beat the Wildcats 5-2. The Lady Tigers dropped their next two matches against Clark Atlanta (3-4) and Tuskegee (2-5).
 
The Benn sisters led the charge, going undefeated over the weekend in singles competition. Gabrielle Benn—the 2022 SIAC Player of the Year—had a flawless first set, beating Fort Valley State's Valerie Dorelein 6-0. She won set two 6-2 for the match win.
 
Amarlia Benn beat Samaar Davis 7-5 and 5-1 in the second court. Upper Iowa University transfer Padmasree Murugan won court three, defeating Jordynn Middlebrooks, 6-4 and 6-0. Fort Valley State's London Lawson earned her team's only point, beating Sarah Joachim 6-1 and 6-0.
 
In doubles action, the Benn sisters shined, defeating Dorelein and Davis 6-2 in the first court. Murugan and Sunzahra Banks won the second court, beating Avery Harris and Lawson 6-2.
 
Later on Saturday, the Lady Tigers were back in action against Clark Atlanta.
 
Gabrielle Benn beat Clark's Jumai Muhammad in the first set 6-2 and won the match with a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set. Amarlia Been defeated Keynon Thompkins on court two 6-3 and 2-1. Murugan won court three, beating Kirsten Blount 6-2 and 6-2.
 
Courts four, five, and six saw consecutive victories for Clark Atlanta. Shani Idlette beat Banks in the fourth spot, 6-2 and 6-0. Gabrielle Blanks beat Joachim in the fifth court, 6-1 and 6-0. Madison Moffatt defeated Ekwalla on court six, 6-0 and 6-0.

Clark also took the point in doubles competition. Moffatt and Blanks beat the Benn sisters with a tiebreaking 7-6 score in the first court. Murugan and Banks dropped the second court to Idlette and Anaiah Jones 4-6. Ekwalla and Joachim fell to Muhammad and Shereese Henry, 0-6 in the third court of doubles.
 
Finishing out the weekend, Savannah State took on a solid Tuskegee team Sunday morning. The Benn sisters won the first two courts of singles action. Murugan suffered her first singles loss, losing to Choloe Harrington on the third court, 4-6 and 3-6.
 
Banks was defeated by Dayna Jackson on the fourth court, 1-6 and 0-6. Joachim dropped court five to Brianna Phillips, 1-6 and 0-6. In the sixth court, Ekwalla fell to Mikiah Stephenson, 0-6 and 0-6.
 
In doubles, the Benn sisters suffered their second loss on court one falling to Jackson and Harrington, 6-7. Murugan and Bakers were defeated in the second court by Stephenson and Hargrove, 2-6. Joachim and Ekwalla dropped the third court to Taylor Ford and Barbara Phillips, 0-6.
 
Savannah State women's tennis travels to Mobile, Alabama this weekend for the first of two SIAC Roundups this season. The Lady Tigers will play six matches against conference foes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
