Baseball Tigers Open SIAC Schedule With Sweep

SAVANNAH, Ga.– The Savannah State baseball team opened the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule this weekend with a three-game series sweep of Lane College.

The Tigers—who were ranked in two preseason polls—improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in SIAC action with the wins.

Andrew Mann, coming off a year of ineligibility, returned to the lineup this season. Mann saw some action in relief during the Tigers' first series of the year. It was a good enough showing to earn a starting role into this weekend.

The junior right hander pitched a gem to open the series up and set the tone for Savannah State on Saturday. Mann completed 8.0 innings after being scheduled for only five. He allowed no earned runs on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts against 29 batters.

After two scoreless innings, Savannah State broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third. Joe Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hakem Smith who reached on an error. Champion Robbins followed that with another SAC fly, plating Desmore Joseph who was walked for a 2-0 SSU lead.

In the fourth, Jaden Oden scored on an error by the pitcher. Into the seventh inning, Savannah State led 3-1. Andrai Wright scored in the seventh on an error and Joe Smith scored on a ground out from Robbins in the eighth for the final 5-1 score.

Leadoff hitter Joe Smith went 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI and a double. The Tigers racked up 11 hits in the win.

Savannah State held the momentum into game two of Saturday's doubleheader. Preseason All-SIAC pitcher Jared Showlater earned his second win of the season with 5.0 innings of stellar work from the mound.

In the 11-4 rout, Showalter allowed one earned run on one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts. In relief, Jose Santiago pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.

From the plate, the Tigers racked up another 11 hits. Joe Smith and Robbins led the team, each going 3-for-4 on the day. Joe Smith had a double while Robbins put up a double and triple in the win. Hakem Smith was 2-for-3 in the win from the plate with a triple.

Savannah State sealed up the series sweep on Sunday with yet another rout, winning 12-1. Enrico Peele led the charge from the mound, pitching 6.0 innings to earn his second win of the season. Peele allowed one earned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts against 26 batters.

In relief, Solomon Masters pitched 1.0 innings, allowing a single hit, no runs and registering one strikeout. The game was called with two outs left in the seventh inning due to run-rule after the Tigers plated four additional runs in the inning.

Shifting from centerfield to designated hitter, Joe Smith was perfect on the day, going 4-for-4 with three RBI, a double and a triple. Robbins went 2-for-4 on the day. Wright was 2-for-2 from the plate and Jacob Rushin was 3-for-4.

The Tigers continue the season on Saturday Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26 with a three-game home series against reigning SIAC Champions Spring Hill College. First pitch of the first game will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
