Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 10 Lady Tigers Slip Past Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –  Down the final stretch of the regular season, every game counts for Savannah State women's basketball as they seek to repeat last year's title.

The No. 10 Lady Tigers slipped past Edward Waters, 69-64, on Saturday to regain first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division. Last season, Savannah State won the regular season SIAC East Title with a 14-1 conference record.

It will come down to the final games for Savannah State and Clark Atlanta to determine who will earn the No. 1 seed into the 2023 SIAC Championship Tournament.

Savannah State and Clark Atlanta each have 12-5 conference records with two conference games remaining. The Lady Tigers improved to 16-6 overall with their win on Saturday.

On Monday, Savannah State was voted the No. 10 team in the D2SIDA South Region Poll. The weekly poll helps the NCAA determine seeding for the 2023 Division II Tournament. SSU has been ranked for most of the season.

In the opening half, Savannah State and Edward Waters battled as the lead changed six times and the game was tied up four times. Savannah State had a 20-16 lead after the first period, but Edward Waters battled back in a low-scoring second quarter.

With 3:02 left in the second quarter, the game was tied at 26. Nyla Allen broke the stalemate nearly two minutes later. Allen went up for a layup and was fouled. She made the basket and tacked on the extra free shot.

Following a missed shot from Edward Waters, Paris Thompson scored on the other end to lift the Lady Tigers to a 31-26 lead at halftime. SSU would not trail or play tied again in the game.

Savannah State extended that lead to nearly double-digits in the third quarter. Into the final period, they led 43-38.

Edward Waters would only get within three points of the Lady Tigers lead in the final quarter as Savannah State sealed up the 5-point win down the stretch behind six good free throws from Jashiyah Jones.

Jones led the field with 19 points on the night, going 10-for-12 at the free-throw line on the night. Bria Gibbs and Allen each scored 18 points in the win to help the Lady Tigers to their 16th victory of the season.

The Lady Tigers conclude the regular season on the road against Albany State (Feb. 18) and Fort Valley State (Feb. 21).

Savannah State University will host the 2023 SIAC Tournament Championship Presented by Cricket Feb. 25-March 5 in Tiger Arena. Tickets are now on sale at thesiac.com.
