Tigers Overcome USCB With Big Win

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State University overcame a double-digit deficit but used a smothering defense to rally back and defeat University of South Carolina-Beaufort 80-69 in a game played at Savannah's EnMarket Arena on November 21, 2023 as part of the Savannah Hoops Invitational.
The crowd of 1,075 saw the Sand Sharks use a 18-6 run to break open a game that was tied at 21 to take a 39-27 lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half.
Down by a dozen, SSU's Ayjay Plain drilled a 3-pointer with three seconds left to cut the Tigers deficit to three as they went into the half trailing 41-32.
Savannah State opened the second period with back-to-back jumpers by Austin Lewis and Plain top pull within five.
Using a pressuring defense, the Tigers put together a 13-4 run that allowed them to take a 49-45 edge with 15:13 left in the game. During the run, a jumper by Chancellor Wilson tied the game at 45. Following Wilson's jumper was a layup by Lewis and a fast break dunk by Qua King. 
The contest had four ties during the next seven minutes. The game was tied at 49 with 12:36 remaining, at 54 with 10:25 on the clock, at 56 with 8:06 left and at 61 with 5:18 remaining in the game.
A 3-pointer by King gave the Tigers a 64-61 edge and jumped started a 18-4 run that was the knockout punch Savannah State needed to put the Sand Sharks away.
With 37 seconds remaining, a pair of free throws by King gave SSU their largest lead of the game at 79-67.
The win fioor the Tigers was their first of the season in three tries.
USCB entered the ngame averaging 119 points but were held to 50 points below their average.
King led Savannah State (1-2) with 29 points and nine rebounds. He also made 10 of 12 free throw attempts.
Plain added 14 points, 10 assists and five steals while Jordan Mikel also scored 14 points. Wilson chipped in 13 points before fouling out.
Qurahn Anderson had a team-high 15 points for USC-Beaufort (3-1).
In a game that featured eight ties and 11 lead changes, the Sand Sharks had the hot shooting hand in the first half while SSU found their scoring touch after intermission. USCB made 60.71 percent of their shots from the field in the first half while Savannah Stae made 65.5 percent of their shots from the floor in the second half.
SSU will return to the hardwood on Nov. 27 as they play their first conference game of the season against Central State University at Tiger Arena at 7:30 p.m.
