Lady Tigers Drop Close Road Game To Allen

COLUMBIA, S.C.– Savannah State women's basketball has struggled on the road this season and again came up short in their second road loss in three days on Monday.
 
The Lady Tigers fell to Allen, 52-59, on Monday, dropping out of first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division.
 
Savannah State is 14-6 overall this season and 10-5 in conference. Clark Atlanta—who they host on Feb. 4—now leads the division with an 11-4 conference record. SSU is 4-5 on the road this year and 8-1 in Tiger Arena.
 
Allen, who joined the SIAC as a full member this year, played a tough game on Monday, with a solid second half leading to their 11th win of the season.
 
Midway through the opening period, Savannah State took a 16-8 lead behind a jump shot from Amari Heard and a good free-throw from Mia Goolsby. With 3:32 to play, Allen opened an 8-0 run to tie the game at 16 all with 2:08 to play.
 
They held SSU to one more point in the period, while they tacked on a pair of field goals for a 20-17 lead after the first 10. But the second period belong to Savannah State. They outscored the home team 14-8 for a 31-28 lead at the half.
 
Allen broke a back-and-forth battle towards the end of the third quarter with a 7-0 run for a 48-42 lead into the final period. Allen held SSU scoreless from the 2:05 mark in the third to the 9:45 mark in the fourth. Allen held the lead through the fourth as the Lady Tigers struggled to score down the stretch.
 
TaQuasia Lampkin led the Lady Tigers with 11 points on the night and nine rebounds. Heard scored 10 in the loss. Savannah State shot 30.6% from the field and 55% from the charity stripe.
 
The Lady Tigers return home on Feb. 4 to face Clark Atlanta for their final home game of the regular season. Tip-off on Senior Day is set for 2 p.m. in Tiger Arena. Savannah State closes the regular season on the road against Edward Waters, Albany State and Fort Valley State.
