No. 7 Lady Tigers Get Past Scrappy LeMoyne-Owen

SAVANNAH, Ga.– Inside Tiger Arena, the Lady Tigers are tough to beat.

On Monday, Savannah State was down at the half, 28-31, against a scrappy four-win LeMoyne-Owen team.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Mia Goolsby made a free-throw at the 5:57 mark to spark an 8-0 run for Savannah State. The Lady Tigers outscored LeMoyne-Owen 14-5 in the quarter for a lead they would not relinquish.

Savannah State extended their advantage to double-digits early in the final quarter behind a fast break field goal from Myasia Jones.

Down the stretch, LeMoyne-Owen fought back with a short run that collapsed SSU's lead to only two points with 1:33 to play.

In the final minute, Myasia Jones sank five free-throws and Jashiyah Jones drained a layup in the paint on a fast break, giving Savannah State the final 57-48 win on home court.

It was the 19th consecutive win in Tiger Arena for the Lady Tigers, dating back to February 11, 2021, when they fell to Benedict.

Savannah State's top scorers were mostly quiet on the night while the Jones' did the heavy lifting. Myasia Jones recorded her first double-double as a Lady Tiger, putting up 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Jashiyah Jones scored 14 points in the win. Top scorer Amari Heard put away eight points on the night for the Lady Tigers while Bria Gibbs managed four.

Savannah State improved to 9-2 on the season and 5-1 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule. They lead the SIAC East Division and were ranked No. 7 in this week's D2SIDA South Region Poll.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Wednesday with another SIAC, cross-divisional, doubleheader. They host Lane College in Tiger Arena at 5:30 p.m.
