Tigers Fall To Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Three days after skimming out a 58-54 win over Benedict, in a battle for the top spot in the division, Savannah State fell to the Tigers from Columbia, 64-69.
 
With the loss, Savannah State dropped to 13-6 overall and 11-4 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action, but remain in first place in the SIAC East Division. Benedict improved to 12-8 overall and 10-5 in conference and sit in the No. 2 spot in the division.
 
In the opening half, neither team had more than a five-point lead as the two well-match programs battled. With 16 seconds to play in the half, Za'Khari Cobb tied it up at 31 all with a dunk.
 
But Asanti Price responded with a buzzer-beating, three-pointer to give Benedict a 34-31 lead into the locker room. Price had 13 points in the first half. Ayjay Plain scored 12 to open.
 
Benedict quickly moved out to a lead in the second half, and held SSU at bay. With 4:08 to play, they took their largest lead of the game, 59-47.
 
Savannah State continued to battle. Eleik Bowles knocked in two good free-throws to spark a 9-3 run over the next three and a half minutes. Plain sank a three-pointer with 24 seconds to play, cutting Benedict's lead to 67-64.
 
Price tacked on two good free-throws with 13 seconds to play and a three-point attempt from Plain was blocked on the Tigers' final possession to seal up the five-point loss for Savannah State.
 
Plain led with 18 points on the night. Bowles finished with 14 and Andrew Okorodudu scored 11 in the loss. Price led Benedict with 21 on the night.  
 
Savannah State closes out a two-game road swing Monday night in Columbia, S.C. with an SIAC East game against new conference member Allen University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
