Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 10 Lady Tigers Rout Benedict

SAVANNAH, Ga.– In a rematch of the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women's Basketball Championship game, No. 10 Savannah State and Benedict battled in Tiger Arena on Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers pulled away with a massive second period, enacting some revenge for the SIAC Championship Game loss with a 70-51 trouncing the reigning SIAC Champions.

On March 5, 2022, Savannah State women's basketball stepped onto the court in Rock Hill, South Carolina poised to finish off a historic regular season run with an SIAC Title. They just had to beat Benedict.

They finished the regular season 14-1 in conference play, earning the No. 1 seed and a regular season SIAC East Division Championship. They also set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season (14).

But Benedict had been a thorn in their side all year. They lost the championship game 69-71, finishing runner-up.

On Wednesday—10 months after that heartbreaking loss—the Lady Tigers were not going to let Benedict hand them another L. Fortunately for SSU, the Tigers from Columbia lost four of their top shooters from last year's championship team.

With a solid coach in James Rice, however, they were not to be underestimated, regardless of personnel changes.

Benedict and Savannah State came out firing on Wednesday with a fast-paced, quick scoring game.
The Lady Tigers quickly moved out to a 15-5 lead in the first five minutes. By the end of the first quarter, they led by six points, 20-14, as Benedict attempted to claw back into the game.

The second period, however, was a runaway for Savannah State. The Lady Tigers outscored Benedict 21-8, shooting 47% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc. By halftime, they led 41-22.

In the second half, the SSU rout continued. With a minute left in the fourth period, they had a 20-point lead. Savannah State scored 24 points off turnovers, using a feisty defensive effort to disrupt the Benedict offense, who were also struggling with poor ball control.

Savannah State shot 40.4% from the floor and saw five Lady Tigers hit double digits in the rout. Shooting guard Mia Goolsby led the Lady Tigers with 18 points on the night.

Point guard Nyla Allen put away 13 for the Lady Tigers. Newcomer Jashiyah Jones had a great game, scoring 12 points. Forward Bria Gibbs tacked on 11 and Amari Heard scored 10.

The Lady Tigers hit the road this weekend. They face Benedict in Columbia, S.C. on Saturday and then Allen in Columbia on Monday. They return home on Feb. 4 to face Clark Atlanta on Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
