Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Slice Out Two Big Home Wins

SAVANNAH, Ga.– Over the last few seasons, it's been a tall order to beat Savannah State women's basketball in Tiger Arena.

That remained true this week, in a pair of home Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) games in Savannah.

The Lady Tigers picked up their 12th and 13th wins of the season, beating Edward Waters, 73-62, on Saturday and Allen, 74-55, on Monday to improve to 13-4 overall and 9-3 in SIAC action. Since the 2019-2020 season, the Lady Tigers are 33-5 in Tiger Arena. This season, they are 7-1.

In the conference standings, the two wins pushed Savannah State out to a solid lead in the SIAC East Division. On Monday, they were again voted the No. 10 team in the D2SIDA South Region Poll.

Against Edward Waters on Saturday, Savannah State came out swinging. They shot 60% from the floor and had a 25-13 lead at the end of the first period. But, the Lady Tigers struggled in the second period, dropping to a 16% clip from the floor, hitting only 2-of-12 field goal attempts.

Despite the lackluster second quarter, they led 37-25 at the half.

The second half got interesting as Edward Waters put on a full court press that forced turnovers and kept them in the game. The physical, whistle-heavy game led to near loss for the Lady Tigers down the stretch.

After leading by 17 in the second quarter, SSU found themselves up against the ropes in the fourth quarter. Edward Waters put together a 13-3 run to open the fourth quarter with an effective full-court press.

With 3:28 to play, they cut SSU's lead to two points behind two good free-throws. Over the stretch of several minutes, Nyla Allen sank four good free-throws to push the Lady Tigers back out to an eight-point lead with 30 seconds to play.

Edward Waters outscored Savannah State 37-36 in the second half, but it wasn't enough in the end to overcome the strong first quarter from the Lady Tigers.

There were a combined 54 fouls called in the game. Edward Waters received 28 of them.

In the end, SSU managed a 32.2% clip from the floor, hitting 19-of-59 attempts. Bria Gibbs and Mia Goolsby led with 19 points each in the win. Allen sank 16 on the night. On defense, Jashiyah Jones led the field with 13 rebounds.

The storyline shifted in Monday's game. Allen, opened the game with a full-court press that created havoc for the SSU offense. Despite the pressure, the Lady Tigers still managed to outscore the visitors 22-17 in a fast-paced, back-and-forth game with quick possessions.

By the half, Savannah State held a small, 37-34, lead. But, the tiny margin wouldn't hold in the second half.

Savannah State came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, outscoring Allen 20-9 for a 57-43 lead. Midway through the fourth quarter, SSU had a 23-point advantage en-route to the final 19-point spread.

The Lady Tigers second half scoring bonanza landed four players in double figures.

Leading the field was Gibbs who recorded her fourth double-double of the season. The senior forward put away 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Allen scored 14 in the win while Goolsby and Amari Heard each had 12.

Savannah State returns to action on Wednesday, January 25 with another key SIAC game. They host Benedict College, the only team they lost to in conference action last year. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
