Tigers Defend Home Court With Two Big Wins

SAVANNAH, Ga.– The reigning Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Champions defending home court this week against two divisional rivals, picking up key wins down the final stretch of the regular season.

Savannah State beat a scrappy Edward Waters team in a final minute thriller, 80-78, on Saturday and then dominated Allen on Monday with a 75-54 win.

Savannah State is 9-0 on home court this season. They improved to 12-5 overall with the wins and 10-3 in SIAC action. They continue to lead the SIAC East Division.

Edward Waters struck first and hit hard to open the game on Saturday. Five minutes in, they had a 15-7 lead on the Tigers. EWU forced turnovers while SSU offense meandered through a milquetoast start.

The Tigers got a spark from Elavian Bowles who hit a turnaround jumper at the 11:46 mark to start a 6-0 run, cutting the visitor's lead to only two points. But Edward Waters responded with a massive 19-2 run that put them up 40-21 with 5:49 to play in the opening half.

Into the locker room, Savannah State trailed a three-win Edward Waters team, 32-41.

The visitor's held that lead for most of the second half. Savannah State then came alive, opening a 14-0 run that put them ahead 74-65 with 5:48 to play.

The offensive spurt included key baskets from true freshmen. Cameron Edmonds hit two three-pointers and Chancellor Wilson drained a field goal and a big-league dunk in the run.

Edward Waters clawed their way back into the game, sinking lots of free-throws. With 1:01 to play, Savannah State led 77-74. Edward Waters' Cahlib Edwards went to the line for a 1-and-1. He made the first, but missed the second. After the free-throws, the visitor's trailed by two points with a minute to play.

On the other end, big senior Andrew Okorodudu was fouled and sent to the charity stripe. Okorodudu hit both to give SSU a four-point lead. But, Edwards fired back with a three-pointer to cut the Tigers' lead to one point with 28 seconds to play.

With possession and the lead, Savannah State simply tried to play keep away for a few seconds. Eleik Bowles, the Tigers' top shooter, was fouled with three ticks left on the clock. Bowles missed the first, but made the second for the final score.

Eleik Bowles finished with 30 points on the night while Okorodudu scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Savannah State managed a 50% clip from the floor, dropping 31-of-62 offerings.

On Monday, Allen scored first—a dunk from Anthony Baker that gave them a 2-0 lead. But Ayjay Plain responded with a field goal and then a three-pointer to give Savannah State a three-point lead at the 17:07 mark—they would not relinquish that lead for the rest of the game.

By the half, SSU led 33-21. Midway through the second half, the Tigers had a 31-point advantage en-route to a blowout 21-point victory.

Plain scored 19 points in the win to lead the Tigers. Eleik Bowles put up 15 in the win. Savannah State shot 51.6% percent in the dominating second half, hitting 16-of-31 field goals.

Savannah State returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 25 for another SIAC East Division bout. They host Benedict at 7:30 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
