No. 10 Lady Tigers Cruise Past Albany State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a fast-paced game, Savannah State cruised past Albany State on Monday, 76-64, picking up a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division win.

The No. 10 Lady Tigers improved to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the SIAC schedule, holding onto first place in the SIAC East Division standings. Earlier in the day, they were ranked the No. 10 team in the D2SIDA South Region Poll.

Savannah State opened Monday's game with a 10-0 run over the first five minutes as Albany State struggled to get any shots to drop. But the Golden Rams finally found their footing and pushed back with a little run towards the end of the quarter.

At the end of the first period, the Lady Tigers led 18-15. In the second quarter, SSU outscored Albany State 27-17 for a 45-32 lead at the half. Albany State put up 13 points in the third, but struggled in the fourth as SSU again outscored them 21-19 for the final 12-point win.

The Lady Tigers shot 46.7% from the field and 60.7% from the free-throw line and saw three players hit double figures.

Amari Heard led the field with her third double-double of the week, scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.  Ta'Quasia Lampkin also had a double-double, scoring 14 points and snagging 11 boards. Bria Gibbs had 13 points in the win for SSU.

Savannah State hits the road this weekend, facing a good Clark Atlanta team in Atlanta on Jan. 16 before returning to Tiger Arena on Jan. 21 to host Edward Waters.
