Lady Tigers Upset Division Leader Albany State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a hard fought win against the divisional leader, Savannah State volleyball played one of the best matches of the young season, beating Albany State 3-1 in Tiger Arena on Tuesday.

Savannah State improved to 3-6 overall with the win and 3-2 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule. Albany State still leads the East Division with a 5-2 conference record and a 5-5 overall record.

Both teams head into the 2022 SIAC Crossover Tournament this weekend, where they will play five matches against SIAC West Division teams over two days.

Savannah State owned Tuesday's SIAC East Division match in Tiger Arena.

In the opening points of the first set, Albany State struggled to handle receptions and committed a number of simple errors at the net, breathing life into the Lady Tigers offensive effort, which took advantage.

By the 20th serve, Albany State tied it up at 10 all. The Lady Tigers broke the stalemate with a 6-2 run for a 17-13 lead, forcing Albany State into a timeout. Out of the timeout, Savannah State held onto their advantage, but the Golden Rams stayed close.

Leading 22-20, the Lady Tigers called a timeout following a 3-0 Albany State run. Out of the break, two Albany State errors and a kill from Allena Norton sealed up the 25-20 set one win for Savannah State.

The second set opened with an Albany State run, but Savannah State soon caught up and then took a 10-8 lead. But two long volleys, that stretched both teams,  ended up in Albany State's favor, knotted the set up at 10-all.

Savannah State pushed out to a 19-15 lead over the next few minutes, but out of a timeout, Albany State bounced back with a huge 4-0 run to tie it up at 19 all. The next two points went to Savannah State as they seemed en-route to another win.

But Albany State, trailing 19-21, opened up a 6-1 run to win a hard-fought second set that lasted nearly 30 minutes, 25-22.

With all the momentum, Albany State opened the third set with a 4-0 run. But Savannah State bounced back and tied the set at 7-all on a kill from Destinee Langston. Then they opened little run for a 12-8 lead.

Leading 18-15, Norton served up seven consecutive points for Savannah State including two service aces to lift the Lady Tigers to a 24-15 lead.

On the edge of winning set three following the early comeback, leading 24-17, Savannah State committed three ugly errors, giving Albany State a chance at the win. But Dorothea Ruffin finished off the win with a kill, on a set from Jessee Grubesic, for the 25-20 win.

Set four was all Savannah State. They opened with a 17-8 run backed by stellar defense at the net and some hard-hitting kills. They held the gas to the floor, winning the final set 25-16 for a 3-1 match victory.

Norton led the Lady Tigers on offense with 12 kills on the night followed by Langston (10) and Jasmine Nettles (7).

Savannah State's defense at the net was stellar. They racked up 10 block assists and three solo blocks. Destiney Gaines led with all three of the solo blocks and three assists, while Nettles, Norton, and Langston each had two assisted blocks. Grubesic had 20 assists on the night while Langston and Nettles each had 17 digs.
