Tigers Fall To Miles In Weather Delayed Day

ALBANY, Ga. – In a weather delayed day at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship, Savannah State baseball dropped one game to Miles College and never got a chance to play the second game.

Savannah State, the No. 1 seed, faced No. 4 Miles to open the second round of the SIAC Championship after beating No. 8 Tuskegee on Thursday. The game was originally scheduled for 9 a.m., but was shifted to 10 a.m. due to inclement weather in the area and later moved to an 11 a.m. start.

Under clear, sunny skies, with a heavy south wind, both teams moved through the first inning scoreless. Miles plated a single run in the second as Savannah State starting pitcher Jose Santiago seemed zeroed in.

But in the third inning, Miles broke the pitching dual wide open. Jacob Bisharat blasted a two-run homer to left, livening up the Golden Bears dugout. Three more singles followed before Orr Clifton hit a second two-run homer off Santiago, lifting Miles to a 6-0 lead.

Omar Almodovar led off for Savannah State in the top of the third with a single. Later, on a single to left from Dwayne Franklin, Almodovar was caught at the plate for the second out, behind some tough infield work from Miles.

Later, Cameron Diaz scored Joe Smith on a single and Franklin was scored on a loaded-bases walk from Calvin Rucker. The two runs cut Miles lead to 6-2. But they extended that lead in the next inning, platting two more runs on three hits.

Towards the end of the bottom of the sixth, Miles leading 8-3, it started to sprinkle.  With one out, Miles again turned around stellar infield work, catching Gabriel Paxtot out at second and then tossing home to grab Phillip Woullard out to end the inning. As soon as the umpire called the final out, the sprinkle turned into a downpour and play was suspended.

The tarps were brought out by the tournament host team, Albany State, and the field was quickly covered. The passing heavy rain slowed, but then lightning struck and the game went into a two-hour rain delay.

Out of the rain delay, Savannah State was hoping to shift the momentum. Since the five-run third inning, it had been all Miles. Woullard opened the seventh with a single and later Patxot singled to reach as well. But again, the Miles infield shut down any run opportunities, catching Woullard at the plate again for the third out.

The Golden Bears tacked on two more runs on two hits in the seventh and then two more in the eighth. But, Savannah State attempted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth.

Smith walked and then Franklin singled to put two runners on to open the inning. Diaz singled to score Smith and later stole second while Franklin stole third. But Miles relief pitcher Drew Shackleford recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and give Miles the 12-5 win.

Santiago was tagged with his first pitching loss of this season. He went 3.1 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Kody Long earned his 10th pitching win after 8.0 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with five walks and six strikeouts.

Savannah State was moved into the consolation bracket where they were scheduled to play Albany State. Because of delays, the game was pushed back to a 7 p.m. start time. It was originally scheduled for 1 p.m.

Just as the announcer was about to read the starting lineups, a hold was called. Lightening was again reported in the area and the game was put on hold as the dugouts were cleared.

Eventually, the game was postponed at 8:26 p.m. The game will be played at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7.

Savannah State's road to an SIAC championship must now go through more games.

A win on Saturday against Albany State will see them play the winner of a game between Morehouse and Tuskegee set to take place on Saturday after Savannah State's game with Albany State. Miles and Spring Hill are the only remaining teams without a loss in the double-elimination tournament.
