Softball Sweeps Allen; Closes Regular Season Schedule

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State softball swept Allen University in a three-game, non-conference series to close out the regular season this weekend.

The Lady Tigers, unofficially, have secured a post-season bid with an 8-10 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) record and a 13-16 overall record.

They will most likely land as the No. 3 seed out of the SIAC East Division when the rankings are released next week. The top four teams from each division will face each other May 5-7 in Albany, Ga. at the 2022 SIAC Softball Championship.

Despite being a member of the conference since the 2019-20 season, the softball program has yet to compete for an SIAC Championship due to the pandemic shutting down the last two seasons.

In their final three-game series of the year, Savannah State held Allen to a single run over three games as they racked up a combined 57 runs on 43 hits to sweep—all three games were ended by run-rule in the fifth inning.

The Lady Tigers beat Allen 23-1 in the first game, on Friday. In the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Lady Tigers beat Allen 20-0 and then 14-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Senior first basemen Da'Ondalyn Simmons led the Lady Tigers on offense, slashing .833/.750/1.000 over the three games. She went 10-for-12 at the plate, with five doubles and a home run.

Infielder-turned-pitcher Casey Sims had an extraordinary weekend in the circle for Savannah State. Sims pitched her first collegiate no-hitter in the final game, going 5.0 innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

Over the three games, Sims pitched 13.0 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with seven walks and 13 strikeouts for an ERA of 1.86 in the series.
