Softball Finishes 2022 Campaign At SIAC Championship

ALBANY, Ga. – Savannah State softball finished out the 2022 campaign on Thursday at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship.

Savannah State—No. 3 East Division—softball faced off with Spring Hill (No. 2 West Division) and Miles (No. 4 West Division) to open the tournament. The Lady Tigers dropped both games, ending the season with a 13-18 overall record.

In the opening game, Savannah State looked strong to start, leading off with a three-run first inning for a lead that would carry through most of the game. Spring Hill squared it up in the bottom of the sixth though with a three-hit, two-run inning.

All tied at 4-4 into the bottom of the seventh, Lindsey Mecom doubled to lead-off for Spring Hill and then Paityn Desormeaux singled to left scoring Mecom for a walk-off win for the Lady Badgers.

Alisyn Ferrell worked 6.1 innings in the loss, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts. Morgan Green, Jalexia Wright, Da'Ondalyn Simmons and Ferrell each had a hit in the loss.

The Lady Tigers again got off to a hot start in the second game on Thursday against Miles. By the fifth inning, Savannah State led 2-1. But Miles platted two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

Savannah State threatened in the top of the sixth, putting the tying run on the bags, but a groundout ended the chance. Miles broke free in the sixth with two more runs on two more hits for a 5-2 lead.

Simmons opened the top of the seventh with a single to reach and Ferrell followed it with a single of her own. Daxne Carrera moved them both into scoring position on a sacrifice groundout. But a pop-up and a line-out for the Lady Tigers ended the game and the season.

This year was Savannah State softball's first post-season bid since the 2018 season and the first since the school rejoined NCAA Division II and the SIAC.
