Baseball Sweeps Weekly SIAC Awards

ATLANTA, Ga. – Savannah State baseball swept the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Player of the Week awards, according to a press release from the conference office.

Joe Smith was named the SIAC Player of the Week and Enrico Peele was named the SIAC Pitcher of the Week, following the Tigers wins over Albany State this past weekend.

This is the seventh and eighth SIAC Player of the Week awards for Savannah State baseball this season. This is Peele's third time being named SIAC Pitcher of the Week this season and Smith's first Player of the Week award.

In a battle for the top spot in the SIAC standings, Savannah State won two of a three-game series on home field, eliminating the Golden Rams from contention for a regular season title. Savannah State leads the SIAC standings with a 25-2 record. They are 30-10 overall this season.

Smith, Savannah State's lead-off man, slashed .667/.750/1.00 over the series with two doubles and a triple—including a walk-off double in game one of the series. Smith leads the team and the SIAC in batting average—and is the No. 3 best batter in Division II—hitting .437 this season.
 
In game two of the three-game series with Albany State, Peele pitched an absolute gem to lead Savannah State to a 12-1 rout of the Golden Rams.
 
After a complete 7.0 innings on the mound, Peele registered one earned run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts against 30 batters for a 1.00 ERA. Peele improved to 10-2 on the season with the win—he leads the SIAC and is ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II in pitching victories this season.
 
Savannah State baseball closes out the regular season this coming Friday and Saturday with a three-game SIAC series at Benedict College. One win in the series will give the Tigers a regular season SIAC title.
