Lady Tigers Win One, Drop Two To Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State softball battled Benedict College this weekend for better standings in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division in their final conference games of the regular season.

The Lady Tigers picked up one win but dropped two over the three-game series. Savannah State combined for 30 hits over the series, including five home runs in a single game.

Trailing 5-0 into the fourth inning of game one, the Lady Tigers' top hitter and primary pitcher Alisyn Ferrell sparked the offense with a double to open a seven-run inning off five hits for a two-run lead into the bottom of the frame.

But Benedict responded, spreading out eight more runs over the final four innings for a 13-9 win. Ferrell earned seven strikeouts in the loss, after a full 6.0 innings in the circle.

The script was flipped in game two as the Lady Tigers spread out 14 hits over five innings for a 15-4 win over Benedict. Da'Ondalyn, Ferrell, and Casey Sims all hit home runs while Rahkell Holden recorded two home runs and a double in the lopsided, run-rule victory.

In Sunday's rubber-match, Benedict took advantage of six costly Savannah State errors and put up nine hits for a 13-4, run-rule victory. Ferrell had five strikeouts in her 4.2 innings of work allowing eight earned runs on nine hits with one walk.

The Lady Tigers are 10-16 overall and 8-10 in conference this season as they head into the final three-game series of the regular season. They currently sit in third place in the SIAC East Division just behind Benedict.

The top four teams from the East and West Divisions will vie for a chance at the 2022 SIAC Softball Championship, set for May 5-7 in Albany, Ga.
Savannah State closes the regular season with a non-conference, three-game series against Allen University, April 22 and April 23 in Columbia, S.C.
