Tigers Upset Morehouse, Punch Ticket To SIAC Championship Game

ROCK HILL, S.C. –Savannah State men's basketball has been better than their record all season and they proved it on Friday in a semifinal game of the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship against a streaking Morehouse College.
 
The Tigers, the No. 3 seed out of the SIAC East Division upset the No. 1 seed out of the East Division, handing the Maroon Tigers their first loss in 18 games and punching their own ticket to the 2022 SIAC Championship game on Saturday with a 60-59 win.
 
Savannah State, now 14-13 overall, will face #2E Benedict College in a title bout at 8 p.m. March 5 just after the Lady Tigers face Benedict College at 5 p.m. for the women's basketball title.
 
The last NCAA Division II Savannah State men's basketball team to win an SIAC Championship was the 1969-1970 team who claimed the crown by beating Alabama State. The 1984-85 team finished runner-up in the tournament, falling to Albany State.
 
The final 2:28 of Friday's game came down to battle at the charity strip.
 
Trey DeLoach dropped a good free-throw to put Savannah State up 59-57. The score would hold through the next four possessions, as both teams missed free-throws and field goal attempts.
 
With 41 seconds to play, Morehouse's Noah Morgan drained one good free-throw to cut Savannah State's lead to 59-58 but missed the tying free-throw. With 36 seconds ticking away, Larson Ashford dropped a free-throw but missed the next one.
 
Morgan again stepped to the line for one free shot with 29 seconds left. Morgan hit the shot and Morehouse trailed by one point. Both teams called their final timeouts to draw up game plans. Following missed shots by Savannah State from the field and the free-throw line, the clocked ticked down to two seconds in a one-point game.
 
Morehouse had possession. Morgan attempted a long three-pointer, but it bounced off the rim and Marcus Scott grabbed the rebound to end the game.
 
The Tigers didn't open the game strong. Morehouse racked up a 15-3 run in the first six minutes. Then Scott sparked a massive 22-8 run for Savannah State with a three-pointer at the 13:44 mark.
 
With 6:49 to play in the first half, DeLoach sank a good free-throw to give Savannah State a 25-23 lead. Morehouse never again led in the game.
 
Morehouse did tie the game up at the beginning of the second half behind a three-pointer from Morgan, but Daryl Richardson pushed the Tigers back out in front with his on long ball.
 
Scott led the Tigers with 17 points on the night, going 5-for-6 from beyond the arch. DeLoach had 11 in the win.
