Tigers Go Yard To Earn Fifth Consecutive SIAC Series Sweep

JACKSON, Tenn. – Savannah State baseball rolled to their fifth consecutive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series sweep this weekend, beating Lane College with the long ball in a three-game road series.

The Tigers improved to 21-6 overall and 17-1 in conference action with the wins. They lead the SIAC East Division standings and were ranked No. 8 in the NCWBA South Region Media Poll last week as they head into the second leg of the season.

Savannah State's bullpen has been outstanding over the last month, pitching the Tigers to huge conference wins. The Tigers' three starters have been fantastic. Jose Santiago is 6-0 on the season with a 2.81 ERA; Jared Showalter is also 6-0 with a 2.37 ERA; and Enrico Peele is 7-1 with a 3.86 ERA.

But it's been a complete game effort from the Tigers. Over the three-game series this weekend, Savannah State went yard eight times as a team and racked up an impressive 45 runs on 47 hits, batting .431 as a team in the sweep.

The Tigers opened the weekend on Saturday with a doubleheader. Into the bottom of the third inning, they lead Lane College 4-1, but the Dragons fired back with three runs to tie the game up.

Lead-off man Joseph Smith broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth with his sixth home run of the season. Dwayne Franklin followed that with his second home run of the season.

Lane managed a run in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to overcome the Tigers at the plate, as the hit parade continued for Savannah State. They added runs in the eighth and ninth for a 9-5 victory in game one.

In relief, Jackson Hickox picked up his first pitching win of the season, going 1.0 innings with no earned runs on one hit, two walks and a single strikeout. Smith led from the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI.

After the narrow victory in game one, game two on Saturday was a complete rout. Savannah State started the game with five runs on four hits in the first inning, including a two-run homer from Champion Robbins and a double from Zion Roland.

Lane put up three runs in the bottom of the third, but the Tigers weren't done at the plate, not by a long shot.

In the top of the sixth, Dwayne Franklin blasted a three-run home run and Phillip Woullard Jr. platted Gabriel Paxtot on a single to push the Tigers out to a 11-4 lead. The seventh mirrored the sixth for Savannah State as Cameron Diaz scored two runs on a single to right center, Robbins plated a run on a single, and Woullard went yard to score three runs. The Tigers scored six more runs on three hits for a 17-5 rout in game two.

Peele earned his seventh pitching win after 6.0 innings on the mound. He allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Franklin led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs.

The final game of the series, on Sunday, opened slowly. Savannah State pushed out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, but broke loose in the fourth.

Franklin blasted his fourth home run of the season and third of the series, scoring three runs. Patxot plated a run on a fielder's choice. Later, doubles from Omar Almodovar and Calvin Rucker both scored runs as the Tigers racked up 10 runs on eight hits, taking advantage of three errors for a 13-0 lead.

In the fifth, Woullard hit his third home run of the season and then Derek Rivera followed that with his own home run. The Tigers spread out six more runs on four hits over the inning for a 19-0 lead. The game was called in the fifth due to lightning strikes in the area.

Showalter picked up his sixth pitching win on Sunday with 4.0 innings of work. He allowed no earned runs on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Savannah State returns home this coming weekend for a big SIAC crossover series against Miles College—and a possible SIAC Championship preview. Miles leads the SIAC West Division with a 15-3 conference record and an 18-9 overall record.

First pitch in the three-game home series is set for Saturday, April 2 at 12 p.m. on Tiger Field. The Tigers will play a doubleheader on Saturday and close out with a single game on Sunday.
