Softball Drops Close Games To SIAC Divisional Leader Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. – Savannah State softball played a really good Albany State team tough this weekend in a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series.

In game one of the series, Albany State put together two strong middle innings to beat Savannah State 8-4. They opened with two runs in the bottom of the first. Savannah State responded with two runs in the top of the second scored off a double from Marcela Foley.

The Golden Rams tacked on three runs off four hits in the third for a 7-2 lead. The Lady Tigers plated two more runs in the fifth inning off two hits, but were unable to get closer.

A pitching duel held game two to a single run scored into the fifth inning, as Alisyn Ferrell and Trista Murphy went head-to-head. Leading 1-0 into the fifth inning, Albany State broke the stalemate behind a homerun from Morgan Brown that gave the home team a 3-0 lead.

But, the Lady Tigers fought back in the top of the sixth. Rahkell Holden reached on a hit pitch, then Kayla McDuffie joined her on the bags with a single to center. Jocelyn Lozano reached on a fielder's choice that caught Holden while she attempted to get to third.

With two runners on and two outs, Da'Ondalyn Simmons went yard to tie the game up at 3-3, scoring Lozano and McDuffie. Ferrell forced a three up, three down to close the sixth inning and keep the game tied into the final frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Albany State opened with a single from Madison Hurt. Then Brown brought her home on a single to right field for the walk-off 4-3 win.

Ferrell pitched 6.1 innings for Savannah State, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Murphy picked up the win after a full 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed three earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

In game three of the series, on Sunday, Albany State put up two runs in the second, and two more in the fifth to lead 4-0 into the sixth inning.

Opening the sixth, Ferrell doubled to left field pushing Leah Dudley to third after she walked. Casey Sims registered an RBI sac fly, scoring Dudley and pushing Ferrell to third. Ja'Nesa Robinson brought in Ferrell with a single to third to cut Albany State's lead to 2-4.

Albany State responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-2 lead. The Lady Tigers tacked on one more run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough, falling 7-3 in game three.

Albany State improved to 22-3 and 7-1 with the wins. Savannah State fell to 3-12 and 1-7.

The Lady Tigers return to action this weekend with a three-game series against SIAC East Divisional rival Fort Valley State. First pitch is set for Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
