Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 20 Savannah State Downs Albany State For 19th Win

ALBANY, Ga. – It's hard to beat Savannah State.

In every single one of their 20 games this season, the Lady Tigers have led after the first quarter—in some games by as much as 20 points. Even in their lone loss of the season, they led after the first quarter.

The early scoring effort, the right out of the box, beat-you-with-overwhelming-offense strategy has played well to lead them to nearly 20 wins this season. The last time a Lady Tigers program had 20 wins in a season, they won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship.

This year's Lady Tigers team are one game closer at 19-1 following another victory this week.

On Monday, they opened a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match against Albany State with an 11-0 run. It was a solid five minutes before the home team managed to score a basket. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Tigers led 16-5.

But Albany State is no joke this year. They have a win against reigning SIAC Champions Benedict (69-63)—the only team Savannah State has lost to and are solid basketball team.

In the second period, the Golden Rams picked up the offense, putting away 12 points to Savannah State's 13, but after the lopsided first period, the Lady Tigers led 29-17 at the midway point of Monday's game.

Albany State kept the push up into the second half. Savannah State still outscored them in the second, 17-15, for a 46-32 lead after three.

Early in the fourth, Albany cut Savannah State's lead to 40-49. But the Lady Tigers were undeterred, trading basket-for-basket down the stretch.

The final defensive effort from Savannah State coupled with the first period scoring was too much for the home team to overcome and like so many other teams this season they lost to Savannah State women's basketball.

On average, Savannah State is outscoring opponents by 20 points a game. They've won 13 of their 20 games by 10 or more points this season. They've put up a total of 1,559 points, averaging 78.0 a game and are shooting 45 percent from the field.

Bria Gibbs again led the Lady Tigers with 12 points and 14 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. Mia Goolsby added eight points and Azhana Maxwell tacked on seven in the win.

Savannah State has the 15th best scoring offense in the nation (NCAA Division II, 297 schools), and best scoring offense in the SIAC. Savannah State also leads the SIAC in assists per game, defensive rebounds per game, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal defense, three-point field goal percentage and win-loss percentage.

This week, Savannah State moved up in two polls. In the D2SIDA South Region Poll they are now tied for fourth place. In the WBCA Coaches Poll the Lady Tigers moved up to the No. 20 team in the nation. They lead the SIAC East Division standings with a 10-1 record.

The Lady Tigers travel to Morris College on Feb. 10 for a non-conference game with Morris College. On Saturday, Feb. 12, they host Allen University in a non-conference game.

On Monday, Feb. 14, they get a rematch with Benedict in Tiger Arena.
