Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 21 Lady Tigers Down Claflin For 17th Win

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Savannah State women's basketball picked up their 17th win of the season on Wednesday with a 67-53 non-conference win over Claflin.

The Lady Tigers moved up in the WBCA Coaching Poll rankings this week to the No. 21 spot after back-to-back wins last week. They lead the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) rankings with a 9-1 conference record.

On Wednesday, Savannah State didn't open as the usually do—lots of points, and stellar defense—against the 4-16 Claflin team (who they demolished earlier this season in Tiger Arena 77-43).

With 3:08 to play in the opening period, Savannah State led 14-10. Shakinah Howard stepped in off the bench however, and dropped a three-pointer and then a good free-throw a minute later to put the Lady Tigers up 18-10 after one.

The second quarter Lady Tigers started to look more like themselves. By the end of the 10, they led 35-18, holding Claflin to only eight points. Savannah State maintained their double-digit lead all the way through the fourth for another victory.

Bria Gibbs led the Lady Tigers with 14 points on the night and nine rebounds. Mia Goolsby scored 11 and Ta'Kyla Austin tacked on 10. The Lady Tigers shot 42.3 percent from the field.

No. 21 Savannah State returns to action with another non-conference road game this Saturday as they head to Jacksonville to take on SIAC provisional team Edward Waters. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

The Lady Tigers return to conference play on Feb. 7 in Albany, Georgia for a rematch with a good Albany State team.
