Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 15 Savannah State Claims SIAC East Division Title

Lady Tigers Down Tuskegee In Penultimate Regular Season Game

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – No. 15 Savannah State women's basketball prevailed on Saturday in a battle of the top divisional teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), beating Tuskegee 79-73.

With the win, Savannah State improved to 24-1, 13-1 SIAC, and claimed the SIAC East Division title heading into the 2022 SIAC Championship Tournament—slated for Feb. 28-March 5 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

In the penultimate game of the regular season, the Lady Tigers faced a tough Tuskegee team—who had already claimed the SIAC West Division title with a 14-2 conference record—in a rescheduled match after the Jan. 5 original date was postponed.

For the first time this season, Savannah State did not lead after the first period. Tied at 24 all into the second period, the Lady Tigers turned on the scoring, dropping 15 points to Tuskegee's nine for a 39-33 lead midway through.

Each team added 40 more points in the second half battle of attrition. The Lady Tigers second period advantage was the game-changer as they skimmed out the six-point win. Le'Andrea Gillis and Ta'Kyla Austin led the Lady Tigers with 18 points each in the win, while Shekinah Howard tacked on 14.

The Lady Tigers close out the regular season on Feb. 24 in Tiger Arena with an SIAC game against Fort Valley State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

Savannah State is outscoring their opponents by a 21.5 point margin this season, averaging 80.8 points a game. Nationally (NCAA Division II), they are ranked No. 2 in scoring margin, trailing only the undefeated No. 1 Glenville State (35.5).

Within the conference, Savannah State leads all teams in assists per game (15.2), blocked shots (111), defensive rebounds per game (30.1), field-goal percentage (45.2), field-goal percentage defense (32.9), scoring margin (21.5), scoring offense (80.8), three-point field goal defense (21.5), three-point field goal percentage (34.6) and won-lost percentage (95.8)

With the win on Saturday, Savannah State has earned a first round bye at the 2022 SIAC Championship. They will play their first game of the post-season at 12 p.m. on March 2 in the quarterfinals against the winner of game that will probably see LeMoyne-Owen face Fort Valley State. The official SIAC tournament bracket will be set by Sunday, Feb. 27.

Savannah State is currently ranked No. 15 in the WBCA Coaches Poll—it's the highest a Savannah State women's basketball team has ever been ranked, surpassing the 2014-15 team who hit No. 16 in the poll. They are also ranked No. 5 in the D2SIDA South Region Poll.

In the first NCAA Division II regional poll, issued last week, Savannah State landed in the No. 8 spot in the South Region. The NCAA poll is the only one considered for an at-large post-season bid. The SIAC champion will receive an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II National Championship.

This season, the Lady Tigers set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season (12) and are close to another school record. With Saturday's win over Tuskegee, they tied the 1992-1993 team who recorded a 24-5 regular season record.

The last team in modern program history to record a 20-plus win regular season was the 2014-15 team led by current head coach Cedric Baker. That team continued on to earn the school's first NCAA Division I conference championship and appearance in the NCAA Division I National Championship.
