No. 12 Lady Tigers Power Past Fort Valley State, Close Regular Season

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The No. 12 Savannah State women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season with a 95-74 win over Fort Valley State at Tiger Arena, before a crowd of 1,122.

The win improves Savannah State to 25-1 overall and 14-1 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Last week, they claimed the SIAC East Division Title and will head into the 2022 SIAC Championship as the No. 1 seed out of the division.

It was the final regular season home game for seniors Le'Andrea Gillis, Ta'Kyla Austin, Shekinah Howard and Azhana Maxwell, who were honored before the game on senior night.

The victory also matches the school record of most wins in a regular season (25) with the 1977-78 team that was coached by Jimmy Westley. Earlier this season, the Lady Tigers set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season at 14-0.

Following the game on Thursday, Savannah State Athletics honored the women's team for their historic season. Director of Athletics Opio Mashariki presented Head Coach Cedric Baker and the entire team a plaque for their accomplishments during the 2021-2022 season.
