Softball Falls To USCB, Splits With Paine

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State softball is finding their footing.

On Tuesday, Savannah State opened a doubleheader header with USC-Beaufort with a 0-15 loss, but in game two, they stepped up the defensive effort, holding the Sandsharks to only three runs, falling 1-3 in the end.

The following day, they hosted Paine College in a doubleheader. In game one, the Lady Tigers racked up five runs on two hits in the first inning. Paine fired back in the fourth with three runs, but Savannah State tacked on a run in both the fourth and the fifth and then two more in the sixth for a 9-4 victory.

Savannah State's starting pitcher Alisyn Ferrell earned the win after a full 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed three earned runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. From the plate, Morgan Green and Da'Ondalyn Simmons led the Lady Tigers each going 2-for-3.

The tables turned, however, in game two of the twinbill.

The Lady Tigers got off to a strong start, leading 3-0 after two complete innings. But in the top of the third, Paine found some room to work. They plated four runs on two hits and two costly SSU errors for a 4-3 lead. Savannah State stranded the go-ahead runs through the fourth and fifth.

Paine added one more run in the top of the sixth for a 5-3 lead into the final inning.

But the visitors killed any momentum for the Lady Tigers, opening the seventh with back-to-back home runs. They concluded the inning with four runs on two hits for a 9-3 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Kayla McDuffie doubled down the right field line to score Green who walked.

Later, McDuffie advanced to third on a wild pitch. But a line-out and a pop-up sealed up the final two outs as Paine took game two, 9-4.

Green, McDuffie and Simmons led the Lady Tigers from the plate with two hits apiece
