Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 15 Savannah State Gets Revenge Against Benedict

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball have been nearly flawless this season.

The one hiccup came in January when reigning Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champions, Benedict College, tripped up the Lady Tigers in the second half of a game and handed them their only loss this season.

On Monday in Tiger Arena, the Lady Tigers got payback.

Following a sloppy opening quarter, where both teams shot under 28 percent from the floor, the Lady Tigers led 13-10. But gradually over the following quarters, the Savannah State scoring machine returned to form.

In the second quarter, they outscored Benedict 16-13 for a 29-23 lead at the half. Savannah State improved from the floor from 28 percent to 50 percent. The second half, however, they turned on the gas. With 4:50 to play in the fourth quarter, the pushed out to a 15-point advantage, their largest lead of the game.

The Lady Tigers shot 88.9 percent from the floor in the final quarter, a vast improvement over their first quarter, for a 53 percent effort in the game. They also hit 74 percent of their shots from the free-throw line, dropping 17-of-23 offerings.

With the win, Savannah State improved to 22-1 overall. They also moved into first place in the SIAC East Division with an 11-1 conference record, pushing out 11-3 Benedict.

Savannah State is outscoring their opponents by 21.7 points this season and have never trailed after the first quarter of a game, averaging 80.0 points each time they hit the hardwood.

Nationally, the Lady Tigers moved into the No. 15 spot of the WBCA Coaches Poll on Tuesday, and are ranked in several categories within NCAA Division II. They are No. 5 in both field-goal percentage defense and free throw attempts, No. 2 in scoring offense and No. 3 in win-lost percentage.

Within the SIAC, they lead the conference in three-point field goal percentage, three-point field goal defense, scoring offense, scoring margin, free throw attempts, field-goal percentage defense, and field-goal percentage, defensive rebounds per game, assists per game, and assists.

The Lady Tigers are in the home stretch of the regular season with only three SIAC contests left before the 2022 SIAC Championship, slated for Feb. 28-March 5. They face Clark Atlanta on Feb. 17, Tuskegee on Feb. 19 and finally Fort Valley State on Feb. 24 in Tiger Arena.
