Softball Splits With UPike To Open Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In Savannah State softball's opening doubleheader of the 2022 season, with a new head coach, the Lady Tigers rebounded from a rout in game one to pick up a win in game two against the University of Pikeville.

Following a 13-2 loss in game one, the Lady Tigers took advantage of some key miscues in game two to secure a win.

Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the first inning, newcomer Kayla McDuffie reached on an error and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Jocelyn Lozano. McDuffie snuck home on a wild pitch to even the score out. Rahkell Holden, who walked, then scored on an error in the left field to give Savannah State a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, JaNesa Robinson reached on an error, then scored on another error to give the Lady Tigers a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Morgan Green walked, stole second and hit third on a groundout. Green then snuck in on a wild pitch for a 4-1 Lady Tiger lead.

Pikeville put runners on in the sixth and seventh inning, but Savannah State's defense stepped up, stranding the runners to help win the game.

Alisyn Ferrell earned her first pitching win after a full 7.0 inning sin the circle. She allowed one earned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts against 29 batters. McDuffie and Green each recorded a hit in the win.
