Undefeated No. 20 Lady Tigers Earn Fifth Win

Lady Tigers Pickup 17th Consecutive Win In Tiger Arena

Savannah, Ga.– The Lady Tigers have played five games and recorded five wins in the opening weeks of the 2022-2023 schedule.

On Saturday, No. 20 Savannah State earned their 17th consecutive win in Tiger Arena beating Anderson University in a non-conference bout, 74-63, in the first home game of the season.

The last time Savannah State lost in Tiger Arena was February 11, 2021 in the COVID year—a seven-game season played in early 2021 after the fall 2020 schedule was suspended. They lost to Benedict 63-81. Since that game, The Lady Tigers have gone 17-0 in Tiger Arena over the last three seasons.

The Lady Tigers moved up to the No. 20 spot in the weekly WBCA Coaches Poll this week.

A year ago, the Lady Tigers began the season with a 14-0 run to set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season. They closed the historic 2021-2022 season with a 27-3 recording, tying the school record for the most wins in a single season.

As Head Coach Cedric Baker's teams often do, the Lady Tigers began Saturday's game at full speed, outscoring Anderson 22-8 in the first quarter for a lead they would not relinquish. Baker began his 19th season at Savannah State and his 29th season of coaching this year.

But the early run took a few minutes to get going. Both teams missed everything they tossed up in the first two minutes. At the 8:01 mark, Amari Heard finally got shot to drop, sparking a 13-2 run for the Lady Tigers over the next four minutes.

Nyla Allen capped the first quarter rout with her second three-pointer of the quarter to give the Lady Tigers a 14-point advantage after the first 10 minutes. A number of the Lady Tigers points came off forced turnovers, results of a strong defensive effort.

The middle two quarters were evenly matched as Anderson brought on a full-court press to attempt to get within single-digits of the Lady Tigers lead. The closest they got to overtaking SSU's lead in the second half was an eight-point spread.

In the fourth, Savannah State extended their advantage to a game-high 19 point spread behind two good free-throws from Allen at the 3:46 mark, solidifying the win before time ran out.

Allen led the entire field on the night with 27 points, going 9-for-16 from the floor. Bria Gibbs had another strong outing with 20 points and nine rebounds. Heard finished with 16 points.

The Lady Tigers will be back in Tiger Arena on Monday, Dec. 5, hosting Miles College in a big cross-divisional Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) matchup.
