No. 20/No. 7 Lady Tigers Continue Home-Court Dominance

Savannah, Ga.– The Lady Tigers continued their home-court dominance on Monday with a commanding 66-56 win over Miles College—their 18th consecutive win in Tiger Arena.

No. 20/No. 7 Savannah State improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule with the win. Miles fell to 5-2 and 2-1 in SIAC.

The Lady Tigers never trailed on Monday night.

Amari Heard opened with a floating jump shot about two minutes into the game. Dereseia Randle tied it up with a second-chance jumper.

Bria Gibbs and Nyla Allen then sparked 5-0 run with back-to-back field goals. With 3:11 to play in the opening quarter, Miles cut SSU's lead to a single point on a field goal from Feliah Greer. But the Lady Tigers quickly responded, taking a 14-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

That would be the closest Miles would come to having a lead in the game. Savannah State outscored them 18-16 in the second quarter for a 32-26 lead at the half. And then issued a total blitz in the third quarter, running up a 14-8 advantage.

With six-minutes left in the fourth quarter, a full-court, man-to-man press from Miles resulted in some costly SSU turnovers and a little run from the visitors. Miles cut the Lady Tigers lead to 42-49. But Mia Goolsby—back from injury after missing two games—took the gas out of the run with a good three-pointer at the 5:59 mark to extend the Lady Tigers lead back out to double-digits.

Miles got within five of SSU's lead with 3:24 to play, but Gibbs put up two good free-throws and Jashiyah Jones tacked on a three-pointer to kill the visitor's momentum down the final stretch.

Allen again led the Lady Tigers with 19 points on the night. Heard finished with 16. Jones and Gibbs each had 12 in the win—Jones had a season-high outing, hitting 3-of-6 from deep and 3-of-8 from the field.

Savannah State finishes the calendar year on the road. They face Anderson on Dec. 10, Tuskegee on Dec. 15, Spring Hill on Dec. 17 and Georgia College on Dec. 19 before returning to Tiger Arena on Jan. 2, 2023.

The last time Savannah State lost in Tiger Arena was February 11, 2021 in the COVID year—a seven-game season played in early 2021 after the fall 2020 schedule was suspended.

The Lady Tigers were ranked No. 7 in the D2SIDA South Region Poll on Monday. They were unranked last week in the same poll. In the WBCA Coaches Poll, they began the season at No. 25 and moved up to No. 20 last week.

The NCAA uses the regular season polls to determine the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament bracket at the end of the season.
