No. 25 Lady Tigers Improve To 4-0

Nyla Allen, Amari Heard Have Career-High Night

Wilberforce, Ohio – Savannah State women's basketball finished their season-opening, four-game road trip with a dominating win over Central State on Monday.
 
The Lady Tigers—who were ranked No. 25 in the WBCA Coaches Preseason Poll—improved to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule with a 89-72 victory. 
 
Central State opened Monday's game with a 4-2 run for their only lead of the game. At the 8:13 mark, Autumn Westmoreland finished a second chance layup to spark a 12-0 run for Savannah State that began a total rout of the opening quarter.
 
On the other side of the ball, the Lady Tiger defense forced several turnovers, holding Central State to only five more points. Savannah State outscored Central 24-9 in the first 10 minutes. 
 
Central improved on their rough start, shooting 42.9% in the second quarter while Savannah State went the other way shooting 36.8% in the second after opening with a 60.0% clip from the floor in the first quarter. Both teams dropped 21 points in the second 10 minutes. Savannah State led 45-30 at the half.
 
Savannah State made up for the poor second quarter performance with a better second half. Central came out of the locker room strong, outscoring the Lady Tigers 24-19 in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers sealed up the win with 25 more points in the fourth for the 17-point win.
 
The Lady Tigers shot 50% from the floor on the night. They were led by Nyla Allen who scored a career-high 28 points, going 8-for-11 from the floor and 11-for-13 from the charity strip. Junior Amari Heard also had a career-high night, scoring 26 points, going 13-for-21 from the field. Bria Gibbs added 12 points in the win.
 
Savannah State will play their first home game of the season this Saturday, Dec. 3. They host Anderson University in Tiger Arena at 2 p.m.
