Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 25 Lady Tigers Move To 3-0 With First SIAC Win

Frankfort, Ky. – In their first conference battle of the young season, Savannah State women's basketball saw four players score double digits en-route to a 61-53 win over Kentucky State.

Savannah State—ranked No. 25 in the WBCA Preseason Coaches Poll—had a sluggish start against the Thorobreds in the opening quarter as both teams put in 15 points. It was the second quarter that eventually would be the game changer.

The Lady Tigers outscored Kentucky State 17-6 over the second 10 minutes, sinking 50% of their shots from the field.

They dominated the final two minutes with a 7-0 run sparked by a three- pointer from Jashiyah Jones at the 1:50 mark. Mia Goolsby tacked on two good free-throws and Nyla Allen sank a layup on a fast break off a turnover as time expired, capping off the run.

Savannah State held on to their double-digit advantage through the third quarter, despite being outscored 12-11. Kentucky State again outscored them in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the second quarter trouncing.

Bria Gibbs led the Lady Tigers with her second double-double of the season, putting away 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Goolsby had a spectacular night as well scoring a season-high 15 points. Allen too put away a season-high 14 points. Jones tacked on 10 in the win.

Savannah State shot 46.2% from the field and 54.4% from beyond the arc. Kentucky State forced 28 Savannah State turnovers, scoring 30 points off the miscues. They had 20 steals in the loss as well.

The Lady Tigers continue their four-game road schedule to open the 2022-2023 season on Monday against Central State in Wilberforce, Ohio. They open the home schedule this Saturday, Dec. 3, against Anderson University. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is set for 2 p.m.
